Mexican flag raised at Arizona high school; other students take it down and burn it

Tensions over immigration reform heightened in the Phoenix area's East Valley Thursday when students raised a Mexican flag over Apache Junction High School — and then other students yanked it down and burned it.

"I know (they) shouldn't have burned the Mexican flag," said Jacob Stewart, a 16-year-old sophomore. "I heard it was raised above the American flag and that just irked me."

He said the turbulence was tied to debates going on in the state Legislature and Congress, where ideas ranging from offering illegal immigrants a chance at citizenship to making them felons are being floated.

Six students — three Hispanic and three white — will be disciplined, Principal Chad Wilson said.

I do think it was VERY uncalled for to burn the mexican flag, it shouldnt have been done.

What also shouldnt have been done was flying it above the american flag. Lets not forget this is America, not Mexico or any other country, and they came here, invited or illegally, and it was disrespect to raise another national flag over the american flag. IMO

And sad, because by the law we have in existence right now, the parents are illegal, the children are citizens.. and some stupid a$$hats are making it an ethnic deal

Teenagers or not, they need to remember where they are!!! And disrespecting the place that gave you a better life then where you could be at right now is just downright insulting. We have accepted ILLEGAL immigrants for YEARS, and this is the respect we get back? Cmon, you really think 12 million illegals will be deported? That could take FOREVER to do, dont we have enough drama to deal with in this world???

- Student in Oceanside draws a picture of an american flag, walks out of his class holding it above his head... is surrounded by students with Mexican flags chanting; vice principal pulls the boy with the drawn american flag into his office and tells him to stop what he's doing... meanwhile students with Mexican flags continue in parking lot

- 12 and 13 year brother and sister followed home by a mob of students, yelled at, threatened, because they wouldn't join the protest and walk out. The students were Polynesian but since they had brown skin, they were verbally attacked for not joining in with the protesting students.

- a 14 yr old girl whose mother is from mexico, father is caucasian, told her fellow classmates she wasn't going to walk out because she wanted to learn. They waited outside the class and she was chased and taunted.

- Several students in the Vista U.S.D. decided to counter-protest by coming to school wearing red, white and blue carrying flags. They were told by teacher to change their clothes and their flags were taken away.

- Another student reported that a mob had tried to take the american flag down from in front of their school but were stopped by a teacher. They returned with their own american flag and stomped on it in front of a crowd of chanting protestors.
