So we have our green card interview scheduled and just got the NOA with the date in the mail today - scheduled for Jan 15! Way sooner than expected. It says on the notice that we must bring the spouse’s birth certificate in addition to the proof of US citizenship. I am the US citizen and when we applied, I only sent in copies of my US passport because I actually lost my birth certificate years ago, and for the application it said I could use either/or as proof of US citizenship. I should have probably requested a new copy of my birth certificate ages ago but I thought my US passport would suffice and wasn’t thinking that much about it. I just ordered a new birth certificate today and it says it will take 8-12 weeks to process.. I know I messed up big time. My question is, should I try to reschedule the interview or show up with just my passport ? Is there a faster way to get a birth certificate ? I see some websites online but I don’t know if they’re credible ...

I would just go to the interview. I’ve seen of cases where they never asked for USC’s birth certificate. Worst case scenario they have you reschedule it.

As an adult in the US, you should in general just have a certified copy of your birth certificate, purchased directly from the department of vital statistics/county where you were born.

If it is required for your interview, and you show up without it, you will likely get an RFE, which you can respond to once you have the certified copy.

Yeah I think it will be ok. After some more research I think I’ll be able to go directly to the registrar where I was born and get a copy in time, gonna call tomorrow and see. And I know I should have a birth certificate, but I haven’t had one in probably 8 years or so, and I’ve successfully been able to travel, get hired at many jobs, buy a house etc etc and even apply for my husbands green card so was starting to think it wasn’t so necessary after all. I’m sure I’ll get it figured out in time, just was panicking when the letter arrived today! Especially because it says “Failure to appear for the scheduled appointment and/or failure to bring the below listed items will result in denial of your application”....pretty scary

OP, if you sent copies of your passport, you should be fine. Just bring your passport with you. After all you are not a US citizen unless the department of state says you are. They won't question your US Citizen status unless you were born in a border town or a ranch or had one of those delayed report birth certificates issued to you.

The list of required evidence gives you the option to bring any of the items listed. Passport is fine.

VitalCheck was quick to get my newborn’s birth certificate under expedited service in 8 days (there was no option to do a walk-in at that time).

Definitely try to do a walk-in if possible at your vital registry office.
