you can go to the motor vehicle department with your EAD and Marriage licence and get the licence in your married name, You dont need the SSn in your married name. Marriage Cert is all you need to change the last name on your license. This is what we did in Massachusetts.

This must be state specific. Wisconsin wouldn't let me get a license in my married name (the name on my green card) until the name attached to my SSN matched.

I did point out that the SSA's own website says not to mail immigration documents, but it took a couple of calls to get different agents and then specifically saying "I need this changed to file taxes properly" to get someone to actually help me and arrange an appointment to show my documents in person.

I need help with my Social Security Number (SSN)

We are prioritizing requests for in-person SSN services for:

  • Individuals age 12 or older applying for their first SSN card.
  • Individuals who need to update or correct their SSN information (such as your name, date of birth, or citizenship) to obtain income, resources, or medical care or coverage, or other services or benefits (for example filing a tax return, applying for housing, or seeking an Economic Impact Payment).

If you believe you qualify for an in-person appointment, call your local office. You can look up the phone number for your local office by accessing our office locator. Please note that appointments may not be immediately available, depending on local health and safety conditions and staffing.

did that work for anyone?

SSA guidelines have been updated to state that no applicant should be required to mail in their USCIS issued items .. GC/EAD .. etc as this contravenes the USCIS requirement for the person to always have them in their possession. This does not include replaceable documents such as birth and marriage certificates .

I am a non-citizen and Social Security says they need to see my DHS lawful presence documents to pay my benefits. Should I mail them to my local office?

Date: December 22, 2020

No. Do not mail any DHS lawful presence documents to SSA. If they are needed, your local office will contact you to possibly schedule an appointment to review and certify your original documentation.

i know that but when i call my office they don’t care. they are not even letting me finish my sentence. I’m like “that’s on your website” and she’s like “WE CAN’T MAKE AN APPOINTMENT I’M SORRY” 😂😂

Call your representative in congress and explain the situation. Or call the next closest office.

It's not true. You can go to any social security office in the United States. They're located in all major and some minor cities. https://www.ssa.gov/locator/

This is how you find your representative: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative

It is true. I have called literally 6 different officies and they all told me the same thing: due to covid they are only taking care of the people living in their jurisdiction. if you not attached to their jurisdiction they won’t help you. this is due to the massive backlock. so yeah i can call but they won’t help me
