Interesting that she takes no responsibility for what has happened, nor does she touch on the all important “root causes”.  Note, the story contains some bad words from the Leftist mayor, I believe she uses this vulgarity to deflect memory of what she herself has done to fuel this crime explosion.

San Francisco's mayor announced Tuesday even more initiatives aimed at curbing open drug use, brazen home break-ins and other criminal behavior that she says have made a mockery of the city's famed tolerance and compassion.

 

Mayor London Breed said at a news conference attended by her police chief and other public safety personnel that she would introduce legislation to allow law enforcement real-time access to surveillance video in certain situations and to make it harder for people to sell stolen goods.

She took $120,000,000 from her police.  Tourist travelers have fallen by about 70%.  Hotel rooms are vacant (I've seen numbers ranging from 75% to 90% are empty).  Criminals are not punished.

 

What, exactly, was expected to happen, if not precisely what IS happening?

I may have posted this video before and OK it mainly focuses on CA but I have seen exactly the same factors play out in Colorado. 

 

I know little about Mayor Breed but lets say she has the best of intentions, I am sure she is not stupid and knows that the majority of the people that voted for her want the problems to go away without causing them any inconvenience, impacting on their life style.

 

Where I am you tend to think of the ski towns, also very liberal, so in my time I have seen the worker bees pushed out down the valley to the less exclusive areas and then those areas change to the point where the affordable housing they do create is $400k.

 

It does make me wonder where all this ends up. they still need their toilets cleaned, their burgers flipped.

 

The violence and crime and of course drugs well they are going to be attracted to such areas. I was listening to NPR driving back today and they had a programme talking about the issues in Portland. 

 

I doubt there is a realistic solution, I would expect it to get worse, well I can not think of why it would get better. It has taken decades to get here so even if there was a solution, not quite sure what that would be, it would take a long time to work through. Nothing to suggest we are anywhere near that.

There's so much NIMBY mentality in liberal cities, it's crazy. Even in towns here where every single house (expensive houses, mind you) has a BLM and other such signs in their yard, so much as propose to put up even a modest mid-rise building nearby and people bicker and veto it, takes forever to get anything approved, nobody can agree on the slightest change. It's easy to put signs in your yard, I guess, a whole different matter to actually make change happen.

 

There was a situation in Portland I believe back in 2014 or so where there was a NIMBY fight over opening a new Trader Joe's. Now, I understand it's kind of a hipstery/yupstery store but it's actually shockingly affordable, even organic foods there will be cheaper than conventional in other stores. However, the residents in that neighborhood pitched a fit and boycotted TJ's from going in, claiming it would cause the neighborhood to "gentrify faster." So, what store ended up going in instead? A Natural Grocers/Vitamin Cottage, which is at least twice more expensive than TJ's on average, carries way more niche products and is smaller. For an area that was considered a "food desert" because it lacked grocery stores, their solution was to put in a store that is way more expensive and way more associated with high income people instead of putting in a more affordable store.

 

Meanwhile, while the homeowners in these areas fight over petty stuff like this, rents and/or housing prices go up and inequality increases. Everyone will vote for vague stuff like "more affordable housing" and even higher taxes but then when it comes to them putting that into action/doing something about it, they expect other people to pick up the slack. Pretty much just like the video says, hypocrisy.
