Question regarding a minor and Derived Citizenship through parent

Hello all, I have a question regarding passports for a minor. I arrived to the USA in 2016 and my son on K1/K2 visas. Since then, all the immigration was complete and I received my citizenship. I then applied for my passport and my sons as well at the same time. I received my passport pretty quickly but for my now 16 year old son whose application for passport was filed with mine has started a letter back and forth correspondence with Dept of State passport office. They are looking for additional information from early years in his life like religious, medical, educational documents that show both our our names. These documents are a bit hard to come by, especially original/not copies of paperwork. I had him when I was very young and not much paperwork exists close to his birth (as requested in the letters from Dept of State). I didn't think I had to get a N600 $1200 certificate of citizenship that takes another year but am i stuck with having to get a DNA maternity testing? I have never heard of this because I was under the impression that submitting passport applications together with birth certificates, marriage certificate with name changes, passports, green card etc was more than enough. The USCIS had never had an issue with our immigration path.

Is this common, or are there other options to ease this issue?

Hi,just finished my kids pasaportes,the ask me als9 for more info evidence ,but since I just have arrived ,I didn’t have much so I went with a doctor for check up and they put my name on the doctors records ,put them on my tax report ,sent school,récord ,I got them a extension for my credit card ,sent them also ore family plan for cel phone ,and after a week they sent my kids passports ,send as much info to show that they are living with you,good luck.

Thank you. I took the financial step and went for a DNA test. Just did it and we will see how this goes. I appreciate you response.

Ok,I hope you get your kids passports ,please come back on how did it go,there’s not much info about this ,had to ask a lot of people for my paper work so it’s good to leave info

We threw some cash at this one and paid the 430 dollars (more or less) for A DNA test on December 17th. As of today we checked the status and he was approved and his passport and card is being printed. 

What you said is so true, so little information regarding this. After we went for the test, I was finally able to speak to my cousin who is an immigration attorney. He said this has been going on but no rhyme or reason. He said if you cannot pay for the DNA test, you can send in as much info you may be able to find, what they say in the letter isn't an all inclusive thing. He's had clients send in pictures I've the years, school pictures, other possible documents, things you may have together, like YMCA membership cards, health insurance etc.

It's upsetting that we have to go through this after all the years we go through legally paying through the immigration system. They allow us to bring out children on visas, pass medical exams, submit birth certificates etc and then for our kids, it isn't enough. Makes no sense.
