My fiancee would be coming from Canada on a K1 visa. Does anyone know if she'll be able to drive with her current Canadian driver's license until we go get her a local one? If so, anyone know how long she'll have that privilege? Just covering our bases and anticipating any delays. Thanks

It depends on the State.  MA, for example, allows someone to use a Foreign or out-of-state license to drive as long as they are visitors.  Once they become a resident, they need to apply for and obtain an MA license.  I believe it needs to be done within 30 days of becoming an MA resident (I remembered it from when I moved to MA years ago but can't find this written in the MA RMV site).

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

Best bet is to look at the DMV website for your state.  All states are different.  My kiwi husband had to get a Washington State driver's license via testing, as his was only valid for 30 days.

Not all states will allow those without green cards to get a DL, which is one of the drawbacks to K-1.

Most states require either a green card or work authorization card to be able to get a driver's license, and it will only be valid for the expiration date on the card.  Coming on a K-1 is considered residency, most states require residents to get a state driver's license within 30 days.  Many K-1s cannot get a driver's license or work until EAD is received, around 8 months these days from the date of filing adjustment of status and EAD application.  Good luck!

it will depend on the state and depending on your location, your particular DMV may not be overly familiar with their own rules. Find people on here who are in your state, and who are familiar with the process. Many states have reciprocals with canada, which make it a bit easier. it can be different than many other countries. We are in virginia and my husband was able to get his DL with his NOA1 from his CR1 (which is different from a k1, so for you, i imagine it would be even easier)

Like others have said, it depends on the state.  I was only able to get my DL when I got my work permit (I’m in VA).
I went to ask a county police officer at some point if it was a problem to use my Swiss license while waiting, and he said that while I would technically need a U.S. license because I was living here, it would most likely not be an issue if ever I were pulled over for something like speeding.  Also, he said because I technically didn’t have a status yet that matches any of the official ones (visitor, permanent resident, student, etc.), I could make an argument for using my Swiss DL.  Once I would get my EAD though, I would have to get a VA drivers license (which I did).

The Drivers License issue was discussed in the OP's previous thread.

It depends on your car insurance, what they will allow her to use your vehicle with.

The following site tells you what NC considers for proving legal presence in the state

https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/help/Pages/proving-legal-presence.aspx

and this site from NC tells you that without legal presense u can not get a Real ID or NC driving license

https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Pages/license-learner-permit.aspx

This topic has been covered and in NC u can drive 60 days (don't drive out of the state as other states may or may not recognize this with your I 94)

you need SS card and EAD to apply for DL

we've just been through this in NC. You can drive on your UK license for 60 days. You cannot get a permanent license until you have your EAD. Even the state-issued ID card that you can get through DMV expires when the K1 visa expires. It is a pain in the neck, for sure!

and to add to that K1 expires when u enter the US / it is the I 94 you need after entering

making I 94,  SS # and EAD important

In Ohio . My Egyptian son in law could drive for a year on his forgoing licence. However it was easier to get his American licence.
