listen, to each their own. I personally would never mail original documents. I’ve had had and actually right now I’m having a very unpleasant experience with the postal system in this country. So what I did when I got my green card was to request an in- person appointment through my Congressman. Easy peasy.

Yep. And if they don’t want to give an appointment, get your congressman involved.

I would never send an original irreplaceable document through the USPS these days.

NB: Half of my family works for USPS!

My second attempt at updating my SS profile: after a couple of hours of being on hold, cut off,  redialing and so on, I was told that the next available appointment was 10 weeks away. Instead, I drove to their office that same day and used their drop box.. they sent back my documents via UPS overnight mail three days later (that was a passport) and I received my replacement SSN within a week.

as others have suggested, give them a call and see what they can do.

About the same deal here. Except no answer at all. Over two days I've spent 7 hours on hold trying to talk to a human. No luck.

Yup, all of last year and beginning of this year all our local SSA offices flat out refused to give you an appointment and told you what to mail to them, "everyone" had to mail their originals (naturally) and I haven't yet heard about any issues with that. Only issue I have heard is when you apply for a passport, a few people have their naturalization certificates disappear in the mail on the way back to them. Both SSA and Passport Agency requires original documents.

Many SSA have opened up a bit more now, so it's not impossible to get an appointment in most places. You don't have to update your info with SSA immediately, it can wait even if you had a name change. Personally I had my name legally changed back in March when I became a citizen and refused to send my originals in the mail to SSA, so I waited for many months and finally in October they allowed me to come show my documents in person instead.

For SSA you send your documents with whatever delivery company you like, and they return it via UPS. USPS doesn't have to be involved, your choice. For the passport your documents are sent with USPS.

You shouldn't send any original documents with any service.

You must've missed that there's a pandemic going on and that pretty much "everything" has changed. Yes, during pretty much all of 2020 people were forced to send their originals in the mail if they needed something updated with SSA.

I called my congressman and got an in person appointment in the pandemic. I just don’t trust the postal system in this country.

There's a pandemic going on and everything from strip clubs to casinos to concert halls are open... just not the SS office. LOL

The law hasn't changed. Permanent residents are required to show their green card to any law enforcement officer who asks for it. That means it must remain in their possession at all times, as even this social security administration memo states: https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/links/05262021015248PM

As I said, when I needed to update my SS card with an unrestricted one it was right in the middle of the pandemic -June 2020. I never even entertained the possibility of mailing the green card regardless of the mail carrier. I’ve had bad experiences with USPS -instead of sending a package to Argentina, they are bouncing it in between Greece and England. UPS did the same thing with my Argentinian ID inside of the United States. I’m afraid the only reason why I haven’t had a bad experience with FedEx is simply because I haven’t used it yet.

So what I did was to contact my Congressman, explain the situation, and request that he helps me get an in- person appointment, and he did. That’s also what I’m doing after I naturalize, unless we have a new, 100% reliable mail carrier (which I doubt will happen in the next 3-4 years). But I digress.

OP, if you don’t want to mail your EAD card, you can contact your Congressman and explain the situation. They’ll understand and most likely, try to help.

The pandemic did not change the fact that it is against the law for non-citizens to not have their original immigration documents on hand.  That's why the SSA sent out memos reminding their staff to "NOT request a non-citizen to submit his or her immigration documents by mail or using the drop box.  Due to DHS regulations, non-citizens are required to have their immigration documents in their possession at all times".  As such, non-citizens are entitled to express interviews at an SSA office to present their original documents --
