This is terribly huge example of migrant death and suffering when lured by promises of entry to the U.S.  However, what never really gets tallied up are all victims of murder, rape, etc., among those who try to make the journey.

The article mentions smuggler payments of $2500-$3500 to get only part way.  Where do poor people get that kind of money?  Even if they had it, knowing that a lot of migrants have that kind of cash would surely set them up as easy targets for robbery.

Rescue workers rushing to a highway accident found a horrific scene of death and injury after a freight truck jammed with as many as 200 migrants tipped over and crashed into the base of a steel pedestrian bridge in southern Mexico.

The migrants inside the cargo trailer were flipped, tossed and crushed into a pile that mingled the living and the dead.

By early Friday, the death toll stood at 54, according to the governor of the State of Chiapas, who also said 105 people were being treated for injuries. It was one of the worst single-day death tolls for migrants in Mexico since the 2010 massacre of 72 migrants by the Zetas drug cartel in the northern state of Tamaulipas.

Volunteer rescuers hauled bodies off the pile by their arms and legs, while some migrants scrambled and limped to extract themselves from the twisted steel sheets of the collapsed container.

They sell everything that they own, borrow from relatives, etc.
