LORENZAGO DI CADORE, Italy - Pope Benedict XVI reasserted the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church, approving a document released Tuesday that says other Christian communities are either defective or not true churches and Catholicism provides the only true path to salvation.

The statement brought swift criticism from Protestant leaders. "It makes us question whether we are indeed praying together for Christian unity," said the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, a fellowship of 75 million Protestants in more than 100 countries.

The Pope has competition on his statement. The Jehovah Witnesses believe everyone not part of their cult as being defective and not a true follower of God's word. This is according to "their" re-written version of the Bible.

For JoeMama: I've oft heard JW's claim "the Greek text says...." quite cluelessly (vast majority of JW's cannot read a lick of Greek--other than the infamous joke "it's Greek to me if I don't know it"). I actually butchered a translation to English from a Tamil Bible (Tamil is my native language) in front of a JW team, and they actually asked me where I'd gotten a "corrupted Greek-text".

The True Religion is called "Living". Living involves looking, smelling, hearing, tasting, and touching. Look at a tree. Don't think "God created this", because he didn't. It's a tree. Don't compare it to a skyscraper or some other man-made #######; it's a tree, and is beautiful and amazing enough on its own without it being compared to things. Listen to the birds chirping in the tree. Feel the roughness of the tree's bark. Eat one of the fruits of the tree - Walnut, pecan, etc. Breathe in the smell of bark, leaves, and earth.

That is true religion.

I remember my babca being upset when John Paul II died and she wasn't crazy about the new pope; she's the strongest Catholic I've ever known in my life and her not liking the pope is kind of a big deal. My mother can't stand him and she was brought up a strong Catholic (tough to be anything else with a Polish mother). She's been talking about leaving the church ever since he was selected. My brother has pretty much given up on Catholicism and since he married a Jewish girl he's been going to temple instead. I think my brother and I will be the last generation of our family to be raised Catholic and that's mostly due to the fact that the church refuses to accept the reality of the modern world.

I was disenchanted by it so I converted to Islam in 1994. Now I'm pretty much disenchanted by that too. I guess it's organized religion itself that I'm turned off by not any particular religion.
