I believe that we go though Calgary for our interviews as I am in Manitoba. or is that not the case?

USA immigrant visas are only processed at the Montreal consulate. See link (under GENERAL INFO) : https://ca.usembassy.gov/visas/family-immigration/

If you come to the US for any reason, start by opening a Bank account and add your wife to it. You don't need to put much money in it right now, enough so they don't charge fees. That's a first step for establishing domicile. You'll need more evidence during the consulate interview.
