Wales was born in Huntsville, Alabama, where he attended Randolph School, a university-preparatory school.[8][9][10] He earned bachelor's and master'sdegrees in finance from Auburn University and the University of Alabama respectively.[9] In graduate school, Wales taught at two universities; however, he departed before completing a PhD to take a job in finance and later worked as the research director of a Chicago futuresand options firm.

In 1996, Wales and two partners founded Bomis, a web portalprimarily known for featuring adult content. Bomis provided the initial funding for the free peer-reviewed encyclopedia, Nupedia (2000–2003). On January 15, 2001, with Larry Sanger and others, Wales launched Wikipedia, a free open-content encyclopedia that enjoyed rapid growth and popularity.

A wise red neck I knew in Florida once told me that the university you attend doesn’t matter.  What matters is the effort you put into that university.

5 years and 2 degrees at a directional university in Florida didn’t impact my earnings.

And even when a right winger attends the top two schools in country if not the planet, his intellect is still insulted.  Exhibit A, the governor of Florida.

Book learning just isn’t highly prized unless one goes to correct schools and has the correct politics.  That leaves the majority who  have neither that  kind of money nor philosophy when we start out.  We manage to muddle through.

It was a "intra regional " joke both are good schools.

Likewise.

My knowledge differs from yours, but then again I don’t known what vague phrases like   “very few” mean

Started off as a Unix kernel developer in 1985. Retired in 2021. Teamblind, levels.fyi are pretty accurate. They show average numbers. Some people aren’t average.  Anyone who can finish med / law school and pass residency / bar isn’t average. Software is  just code.

I was once at a going away dinner for a coworker. At the dinner former coworkers from a company we both worked at were also there.  One of whom asserted that jobs in the valley earning $400K total compensation (TC) didn’t really exist and he interviewed outside to prove it.  I held my tongue as I knew the young lady going away with 5 years less experience was heading to a new job earning $600K total compensation.

The high pay is there, but you have get the interview (she knew someone) and you have to prepare (which she did, bugging me every day for a month for a new algorithm or design problem to solve).

So is your advice to forgo University for the one in 1000 in terms of capabilities and desire to work around the clock, or for "average" college bound high-school grad?  I could make the same argument for a somewhat gifted athlete or musician

The only ones I know making close to 300k in Seattle, (salary and bonus exclude RSU ) are Service Design Engineers and some TPMs. Straight coders, out of high-school? not that I have heard. Maybe the bay area is way higher than Seattle.

I know some plumbers and electricians that are making a lot of real money without the need for massive and in many cases useless debt.  I know you always advocate expanding the IRS to collect taxes, aren't most student loans due to the Federal government?

My advice is to forgo student loans and get affordable education.

Agree. That's what my husband did here (also IT - Computer Science) and has no student loans or any debt, we just paid for him to get a degree at a state school supplemented by community college, he also got a bunch of grants and some small scholarships. No one cares about the school you went to in IT these days unless it's some super elite/prestigious niche field where they only want MIT/Stanford PhD's. However, people in IT expect you to have either years of experience or a degree. The old days where you could just show up and learn on the job without a degree or experience are long gone. My husband tried that route prior to enrolling in the degree and it went nowhere. Maybe it's still doable in the Bay Area, if you want to live in an overpriced rented closet with 5-10 roommates and get some kind of "lucky break" or something.

However, my husband is also really good at math (he did a math minor) so we looked into him getting a job in finance or doing something with finance and computers. The situation could not be more opposite: most finance firms basically say in their job descriptions "If you didn't graduate from an elite school, don't even bother applying." So, it seems to me the big city finance world is one of the snobbiest and most prestige degree obsessed fields. Very disgusting people in those fields, about the exact white collar snob stereotypes you can imagine. Why they're all so obsessed with "elite schools" is beyond me, it seems very much like a "it's a big club and you ain't in it" kind of gatekeeping. They clearly don't care about finding unknown talent, but just hiring people already in their social circle.

In all seriousness those guys stay on the phone. I despise calling people and they stand on the front lot in 100 degree weather or freezing cold all day long.

I take a much more gentlemanly approach. I duck out for a bit after lunch, work about half of the day take all my off days. Much like a ..... lol not gonna say it

I know, I know.

When I was a young pup and new in town I worked some crazy hours.  Started before 8 am and worked till nearly 8 pm M-Th.  Worked on Fridays also, but not late.  On weekends I was doing my own lab work making dentures and partials at home.  Ex-wife was also a dentist and we worked together, although she never worked those crazy hours as she was home with the kids when they weren't in school or daycare.  Made some crazy money but it took it's toll on our personal life.  That's why I don't work like that now.  I like having a life.
