James Crumbley purchased the gun, a 9 mm Sig Sauer SP2022 semi-automatic pistol, on Black Friday, November 26, at a shooting goods store in Oxford. A store employee confirmed that Crumbley's son, Ethan, was with him, the prosecutor said.

 

On or around the same day, Ethan Crumbley posted a photo on social media with the caption: "Just got my new beauty today. SIG SAUER 9mm." The post included heart emoji, McDonald said.

On or around November 27, Jennifer Crumbley posted on social media: "mom and son day testing out his new Christmas present."

What would I do?

Practical answer: Not run because it will only improve my chance of looking guilty and decrease my chance of getting out during the process of trial etc. 

Moral answer: Not run and turn myself in because it is the right thing to do. 

Amoral answer: the only way you are getting out of this is to have ready cash for the rest of your life and a viable way to get to Venezuela. As these folks aren't skilled underworld types and probably don't have the skills or means to pull that off so, turn yourself in.

Honestly, in this area, it is a bit of lynch mob forming based on the information the prosecutor has chosen to release.  I am not surprised the parents left their home after the events of Tuesday as I have read they along with their extended family have been receiving threats.  I suspect it could be argued the prosecutor is sort of trying these parents in the court of public opinion, and possibly tainting the jury pool.  We shall see, the wheels of justice turn very slowly.

Given what transpired, this certainly looks damning, but of course we have no idea what was going on completely with the family.  Here in Michigan, it is not uncommon for parents to buy firearms for their kids whether for hunting or target practice.  So far we only have the information the prosecutor Karen McDonald has chosen to release and some may say what she is releasing is a little reckless given the media attention here.  Some here are opining that the charges for the parents may be upped to murder 2, time will tell.

We cannot bring back the 4 lost children. We cannot make the terror and hurt of the other children and staff disappear without a scar.

 

What we could do is have an honest discussion about our culture. Instead we will have another debate about waiting periods and background checks, that goes nowhere, a debate about mental health funding, that goes nowhere, and a debate about cars and knives and pipe wrenches, that goes  nowhere. 

 

Good for CNN and Fox ratings with the chase and the trial, good for moralizing leaders who promote this as the time to act or the self-righteous who proclaim our sacred right to bear whatever weapon in whichever form....

And a raw deal for the children that are depending on adults to make them safe.

There are certainly death threats out against these parents, whether they would be literally lynched by a mob, probably not, but who knows.

 

I agree with your academic response to the hypothetical, but of course until it actually happens, who knows.  I liken it to all the training I went through when I became a volunteer firefighter, of course we train and train about how to handle our self’s going into a burning house, but until you are actually faced with the situation, who knows what will happen.  I remember having a hose partner at the front door of a burning house that forgot to connect his air hose to his mask, needless to say, he took a lungful of smoke and started backing out of the door.  I had to get him off the porch and send him to medical.

 

We shall see what happens, I expect we will see more charges against the parents and possibly the school officials.  I really don’t think a 15 year old just decides in one day to shoot up a school because his dad bought him a gun.

It appears the parents were less than responsible gun owners.  Most parents I know that take their kids hunting or shooting are very responsible with their guns and the children only have access when doing the event.

Would that be the social media culture, the cancel culture, the cancellation culture?  I know, more money for mental health, maybe all kids can be made immediate wards of the state so some regressive Democrat approved psychologist can constantly monitor them to make sure they grow up good little socialist.

 

Unfortunately, there are no restrictions to people becoming parents.  I am sure there will be a lot more coming out about the home life of this monster and how he was failed by his parents and the public education system.

Maybe all the Covid isolation had a play into the mental health of this 15 year old.  Who really knows, but we should be worrying about those closet to us before we make sweeping changes to the nation.
