My fiance is in the US. She came on K1, we were married, she did biometrics, and now we are doing the interview for her green card.

This is what we plan to bring:

  • Copy of I 797 C notice

  • Copy of her passport

  • Covid vaccine papers showing we got them same day/place/time twice

  • i-864

  • Copy of my tax returns for 2018, 2019, 2020

  • Copy of my passport

  • Copy of my birth certificate

  • Copy of her birth certificate with certified translation

  • Certified copy of marriage license

  • Copy my divorce decree from previous marriage

  • Copy of our lease

  • pictures of us in 11 different states from our travels over the last year

  • Christmas card sent to both of our names at this address

  • Affidavit from my brother that he knows us and our marriage is real

  • Affidavit from my business partner that he knows us and our marriage is real

  • Mailings when I added her to my credit card accounts showing she is an "authorized user"

  • Copy of my will, with everything going to her if I croak

  • Copy of medical bill when I paid for her to get treatment. Shows her as patient, me as payee.

  • Water bill with both of our names on it

  • Hotel booking receipts with both of our names

Are we missing anything?

Anything we are bringing that we should leave home?

Thanks friends!

We were missing a current I-94.  And do you have joint bank account statements?  Any joint assets?

Otherwise, looks good!

You have your marriage certificate, right?

That is not the same thing that you purchased to allow you to marry (which is the license).

The certificate is what you get back after the marriage and contains the stamp or seal (and what you submitted in triplicate for I485, I765 and I131).

As you probably know, America is a strange place with lots of different local peculiarities. There is no such thing as a 'marriage certificate' where we live. What we do here is get a marriage license that we fill out ourselves. Then we take that to the county courthouse to file it. Once it's filed, you are married. Then you (or anyone else) can purchase a certified copy of the filed marriage license for $5 at the court house. That "certified copy of marriage license" is what we filed with the I-485 so I am guessing it should be alright for the interview too.

Thanks! I almost forgot about the I-94! That is one thing that is not mentioned in the notice we received.

She has no assets or income here or abroad, and never has. I have paid for everything of hers for the last 10 years. She lived on a family farm then met me and I have been her sole provider ever since.

She is not on my bank account because my bank won't add anyone without a social security number. I argued with them for 3 months about this, all the way up to the top levels of management. They simply will not budge.

Unfortunately she couldn't get a SS#. When she arrived the local SS office was closed to in person visits. When I called they told us to send in her original documents (including passsport) through the mail which is obviously stupid. When I said she needed her passport they would either put me on hold for hours or simply hang up the phone. This went on for a month. So she never got a SS#.

She applied for permission to work along with AOS application, hoping that would help, but the AOS appointment came first. We never heard any word on permission to work. I guess it will become moot when she gets a green card.

I have 11 credit cards in good standing. I was only able to add her to 2 of those cards without her having a SS#.

So far we haven't had any issues with this application process at all and I am hoping it will stay that way. Let's see :)

A good rule of thumb is to take everything that you sent up with the original AOS, and then everything you gathered from AOS filing time to interview. You did make a double copy of your packet right? Even if you take something you don't need, it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it! Each interviewer is different in what they want to see or what they ask for!

Lease is listed there in the original post.

I don't own anything, no deeds, no mortgage.

Neither of us has health insurance. Neither of us ever have.

Neither of us has life insurance. Neither of us ever have.

I have car insurance. She doesn't drive.

You'll need to work on a couple of those items prior to ROC I suspect.

We had appointment. She passed. Interviewer didn't look at most of the stuff we brought.

He only wanted to see:

- Water bill with both names.

- Credit card bill with both names.

- affidavits from brother and business partner.

- Pictures (that he quickly looked over and handed back).

That was it.

He said he decided to approve us before we even walked in.

Green card is on the way!

Congrats!!!

Remember not to stop collecting stuff for when you have to apply for ROC in two years. For now, time to rest!

Every now and then some AOS interviews get waived. Very very rarely though. Mine was cancelled right before the OMS declared the pandemic. Oh, I remember those previous days... FOs were closing left and right... And the same day I got the call, somebody here in VJ said they'd made it to the parking lot of my FO, and got turned away. Nerve racking. So, knowing that, I was glued to my phone. The call came from an unknown number, which I usually don't pick up, but something told me to pick up that day and it was the nicest officer all very apologetic letting me know of the cancellation.
