Merging ITIN to SSN

 Share

Looking for some folks who have merged tax returns. Has anyone applied for ITIN and later been assigned a SSN?

For folks who have been filing taxes under ITIN for number of years then started to file taxes under the new SSN, how did you manage to merge the accounts? Any feedback from going through process?

A Family member of ours filed under ITIN for few years and then started to file returns under new SSN once he was eligible.

The purpose of this is that, we want to make sure that IRS can combine the two in hopes that all the ITIN witholding can be properly applied to SSN.

Thank you.

This is a common situation.  The taxpayer should write a letter to the IRS and request that the numbers be combined under the SSN.

Make a copy of your CP565 notice, which is the Notice of ITIN Assignment you received from the IRS when assigned your ITIN.

Attach the copies of your Social Security card and the CP565 form to the back of the letter.

Then he could attach a copy of a tax return or other document as clear evidence of his ITIN and name or birth date.  The purpose is to clearly show a connection between the ITIN, his new SSN, and name.  That way, they will correctly credit his SS account.

was the family member living and filing with US earned monies under the ITIN?

if living  in US  a visit to an IRS office can be made

take a copy of latest income tax returns (ITIN on it) and proof of ID /  they can pull up the CP565 and assist with your needs

If a non resident and spouse filing using ITIN,  the foreign income will not be added to US earnings for SS

So long story short, the family member overstayed the visa but got a green card through i-601.

During the overstay, he filed taxes using ITIN. Then when he recieved the green card, SSN.
