Hi all, I arrived in the US and currently waiting for my social security card. I start my new job in 2 weeks. If I call the SS national toll free number 1-800-772-1213  will I get an update on whether my card is being worked on? Thanks for the advise.

You may do but it is pretty hit or miss. I have both been given useful personal information by agents on that number, as well as that they cannot give any personal information.

Better bet is to contact the local office that you made your application at.

I ticked the box on the ds-260 and confirmed that I'd like the SSN to be sent to my address. I entered the US 3 days ago.

Trying the 1-800 number can’t hurt. However as I said I personally experienced mixed fortunes when dealing with them - seems to be a lottery depending on which agent you get.

Best of luck to you.

Hi, as long as you checked the box on ds-260 to have it delivered to the address you provided you should have it in 2-4 weeks. If not you can contact your local ssn office.

You can still begin working despite your SSN not having arrived.  Refer to the instructions for form I-9.  Your machine readable temporary I-551 serves as identification and work authorization.  You will still need to get the SSN, but it shouldn't stop you from begging to work.

Thank you. I received a request from my employer to fill out Section 1 of the I9 on I9 everywhere app and I wasn't sure what to do about the part that requests for the SSN. I will let them know I have to wait for the SSN.
