Transferring Kids School Mid Year

I'm trying my best to time our move on the school year and avoid mid-year enrollments.  Our PH schools are on the U.S. schedule, so we hope to move in late June and have them enter the new U.S. school in August.

I believe that you still need to notify the local school that you arrived. There might be a grace period for enrollment if it is that close to the end of the school. I will find out and get back to you.

Sure you can PM me, but she sounds perfectly fine and curious to me. "Deep" words are always challenging and the fact that she is asking is great!

I am on lunch break so I can check back in. I asked my district colleague and yes, you would still register your kids whenever you get here--even within the last week of of school and they could even start that week if you and the school felt it was appropriate. Obviously you may have other pressing issues during the first few days to tend to, but register the kids as soon as you can. Good luck!

Here they went ahead and completed the enrolment before she was even here. They just ask a guesstimated date when we would want to start and requested we notify them again when she was here and we had a certain date.

We actually got an expedite from the Embassy so we could start the school year here with all the students. Fortunately my step daughter was a great student with very good English skills.  She did Junior Year in person and got Honor Roll each semester.  Senior year was all at home online.  She still ended up with high Honor Roll and graduated with her class.  The math from her private school in Manila was actually more advanced than in the US but they just call it math so they didnt know where to put her.  She already mastered advanced Trig from sophomore year in Manila so she breezed through the US requirements.  She went to a highly ranked high school here too.  Overall it was much easier than I expected.

I was wondering if you know if any Philippines college course credits can transfer to U.S. colleges such as a junior / community college.

 

Our plan was to move in June 2022 when my step-daughter finishes 12th grade in private school here in the Philippines.  Then she would start at a community college in San Antonio in fall 2022.

 

Now we had to delay moving for one year, so we are not sure what she will do for school next year.  She has some colleges here in Subic Bay that she can attend, but I'm afraid those class credits will not be transferable to the U.S., so they might be just "college experience" classes.

 

Thoughts?

Sorry, this one is out of my area of expertise, but I highly doubt the credits would be transferable. I have heard of people coming with full professional degrees (i.e., physicians and nurses) whose degrees did not count here. The Philippine school system change to K-12 might have made a difference, but the community college route is, my opinion and experience, a great way to start. Joan graduated high school in the Philippines when the equivalent here was 10th grade (I worked with a family--not in my capacity with the school district--where the HS graduate needed to enroll and finish two years of high school here). Joan would have needed to get a GED here to enroll in a 4-year college but was able to enroll in our local community college that luckily specialized in the area that she wanted to study. Pardon the "proud husband" moment here, but she went on to become valedictorian of her class! I guess she did ok! Point is that community college could be a great place for your step-daughter to start. Best of luck to her and to you!

Thanks!  Unfortunately, my step-daughter is the one who will suffer the most from our one year delay.  For my grade school daughters, there is little impact.

Yes, that is a tough one. Just trying to think out of the box...would she be able to enroll in online classes at the community college in San Antonio?

I thought of that, but I think she would have to enroll as a foreign student and the tuition is sky high!  It is still on the table.

Ouch. I forgot about that. Joan had already established residence before she started. What about sharing the course catalog/syllabi with your local school first to see if the credits will transfer---but thinking back, there were placement tests involved to see where Joan would start in the core curriculum, so  I am not sure how that would work. Worth a phone call though.

Still thinking...it is probably going to take a year to establish residency for in-state tuition. Is there a local adult community school (usually attached to a high school) and by chance do they have a connection to the community college? Perhaps she could take some of the prerequisite classes there and transfer them over---or if she does need to take "remedial" classes (i.e., math or English as a Second Language) then maybe she can take them at the adult school to prepare for her entrance exams. The adult school here was very inexpensive and that was before Joan established residency.
