When can you apply for Citizenship?

Hello,

I know for people who are married to an U.S. Citizen can apply for the citizenship if they have been married for 3 years.

But, I am not sure if that 3 years mean after you get the marriage-based green card, or 3 years after the marriage/wedding date.

For example, If I married to a U.S citizen on 01/2020, 3 years of marriage would be 01/2023.

And If I got the marriage based green card approved on 05/2021, the 3 years after the green card approval would be 05/2024.

When can I apply for the citizenship if I am married to a US Citizen?

BOTH conditions have to be true:

Married to USC for 3 years

Legal resident (Green Card) for 3 years.

In your example, the person would be eligible to file 3 years after the date he/she became a Green Card holder minus 90 days... in 2024

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..
