Went to green card interview, then told we don't need to do an interview. Is USCIS approving i485 & i130 green card applications without interview?

We applied for i130, i485 2 years ago. USCIS sent me an interview notice. I went to USCIS on the scheduled date and time with my spouse. At the time of check-in, we were asked to verify our information, and submit the required documents, and then we were told that no interview was needed. We asked if an interview follow up will be sent, and they said "most likely no", and we will hear back within 30 days. They could not tell us whether the i130,i485 were approved.

I am so confused. We were expecting to be interviewed. Is this a mistake or is USCIS approving marriage based green cards without interview process?

It's possible, but not typical.  IIRC, @ra0010 was approved without interview.  But unlike you, they were not scheduled for interview at all.

Hi Chancy! Yes, we were approved without an interview in a way. It was right the day before the OMS declared the pandemic. Our interview was scheduled for March 18th, a very nice officer from the Pittsburgh FO called us the day before to cancel it. Then, about two weeks later we did receive a mail from the FO asking us to send the evidence we were going to show at the interview. We didn't frontload our application with evidence initially. However, I do know of one person that did and the same FO approved the GC without interview.

Now we are getting ready to file for ROC and I do expect an interview.

That's weird but who knows! What was your initial visa?

I guess you'll have to wait. Did they give you a paper saying that no interview was needed?
