Hi,

I had my interview couple of weeks ago and passed and waiting for my oath after a few days.

today I got a call from a debt collector saying I owe money to my dentist. I never knew I owe money , anyway then I called the dentist and I knew that they couldn't process it via my insurance and they just asked me to pay the money via a collector without reaching out to me first.

long story short, I said fine and I paid the money to the collector and waiting for the invoice.

now what is the impact on me ? what will happen to my oath appointment when I go ?

should I answer "Yes" to this question "Since your interview, have you been arrested, cited, charged, indicted, convicted, fined, or imprisoned for breaking or violating any law or ordinance, including traffic violations?"

Thank You

You haven't violated anything, your dentist did (moral ordinance), so why would you say yes?

The dentist just said sorry but no proof for that.

Anyone think the same ? Am I overthinking?

Owing a debt is not illegal, and based on your first post, you've already paid it so it's a complete non-issue.

Edit: For future reference, you should always demand proof of the debt from a collector before paying anything.

Back to my concern, so I should go to the oath normally and answer "No" to questionnaire.

"Since your interview, have you been arrested, cited, charged, indicted, convicted, fined, or imprisoned for breaking or violating any law or ordinance, including traffic violations?"

anyone disagree?

you did not break a law / owning money if u did is not a crime

go, in peace

try to find out who called and if you actually owed money / i hope u have the caller on phone

it really doesn't sound legit

with no bill from dentist? and no letter from a collection agency or lawyer to collect?

don't just pay something if u don't know who is really calling

BTW

we get calls all the time from SS and IRS ( and they are not legit)

IRS and SS will never call and say "u owe money"

Criminal law and civil law are separate types of the law in the USA. Your naturalization is not affected only by civil law issues.

The matter of an alleged debt between two parties is part of civil law.

Even if you actually owed this debt and even you if refused to pay it, it would not be an offense under criminal law. However if you were ordered to pay by a judge, you refused, and the judge issued a contempt of court conviction as a result, then the contempt of court conviction  would be a criminal offense.

The situation you are describing has zero effect  on your naturalization.

Steps to take:

1) breathe in. You already paid what you owed and even if you owed money, that is not a criminal offense.

2) answer “no” and go to your oath ceremony.

3) ditch that dentist and switch to one that has more transparent procedures.

It seems you don’t like to hear good news and are always primed for bad news. Several people have already told you the answer is NO and that it has no bearing on your naturalization. Are you looking for bad news?

Just another random guy from the internet with an opinion, although usually backed by data!
