Police Certificates - When to get

Hi all,

Wanting my husband to apply for his NZ police checks soon because I've heard it takes a few weeks to process and I'm just wanting to be proactive & to tick something off the list but wondering if I'm jumping the gun here and if it's better to wait. We are on month 9 of waiting for our I-130 approval - so our case still hasn't been sent to NVC and we haven't received welcome letter, case #, etc. Seeing the police checks get sent straight to the Consulate - are there any opinions on when is the best time to request it? I guess I'm worried if they don't immediately have a NVC case to link it to when they receive it then they'll just dismiss it but at the same time I don't want to wait longer than I have to and cause delays for myself down the line.

Any thoughts here?

Should be safe to get now but I normally recommend requesting after petition approval.

PRC expire.  I'd wait until after approval to get it so you're not stuck scrambling to get another one right before an interview.

Alternatively, get one now and be prepared to obtain a new one, if needed, before the interview.

9mo out from an interview as an estimate by the OP...if it's a 12mo expiration, it's not worth it.

State Department recently sent out guidance that all police certificates, regardless of country, are now valid for two years.

One thing to note is that Consular Officers have never cared about expiration dates on the face of police reports.  That's internal to the agency issuing the report.  Consular Officers are concerned only with comparing issue dates to interview dates.
