K1 SSN application and I485

My fiancé entered US with K1 visa early October. I called local SSA office a week after to make an appointment for SSN application. However, the earliest available time is the at end of November. I didn’t expect they are so busy and I was told we couldn’t go to other SSA offices since the it is assigned based on zip code. The appointment date is only 40 days (includes Thanksgiving, Christmas, and new year holidays) away from I-94 expiration date, is it too short for them to process and issue SSN nowadays? I heard several cases that SSN got denied because their I-94s were expired during SSN process.

We just started to prepare for I-485 and I-765. I see both forms ask if you have ss card and if want to SSA to issue one. I am wondering if we can select yes on “Do you want the SSA to issue you a Social Security card?” on both forms and still go to local SSA office at the end of this month? what will happen if we request SSN on I485 and I-765, but the SSN application at local office get approved or denied? Thanks!

Maybe, but maybe not.

They will stop processing a K1 SSN on Day 76.

Nothing. If you get one before EAD or GC, they will just send a replacement one after EAD or GC approval.

Keep in mind that if you are going to apply for AOS/EAD in your married name, you'll need a replacement SSN card anyways as your SSN that will be applied for within the 90 day period is applied for in your MAIDEN name.

Thanks! There is no name change for my husband. If he get one before EAD and GC, and a replacement card after EAD/GC approval, what are the differences between these two cards?  Will they have the same SSN?

We will submit I-485 and I-765 at the same time, but will they get processed together or separately? will we get one replacement after EAD approval and another one after GC approval, or just one?

Depends on whether you get approved for EAD or GC first.

EAD first: that card will have restrictions on it so after you get your GC you'll have to request an unrestricted card.

GC first, you won't.

Separate but parallel processes.

Sorry. I meant what are the differences between the card which will be applied with valid I-94 at the local SSA office and the replacement card after EAD(GC) approval. I am wondering if they know the applicant already got one, why need to send a replacement after EAD is approved? or if they do not know the applicant already got one, will they issue another ss card with a different number? Sorry for having so many questions.

In your case, nothing because there is no name change taking place.

In normal cases, the initial card applied for within 90 days comes in the maiden name matching I94 as explained. EAD one comes in married name as that's your new immigration record name after EAD approval.

Automatic process. You apply, you get.

No. One in a million chance (that's hyperbole).

Why because your SSA record contains your parents' names to identify you from any other Joe Blow.
