hi ! i came into US on K1 on june 22 and we got married on Jul 7. As per advise on VJ, I waited for the 2 weeks before I apply for my SS# now I am wondering whether I am supposed to apply in my maiden name or married name as I am taking my husband's last name??? I am reading confusing posts here...I have yet to receive my Marriage certificate. Will get it by july 20. Please advise what should I do as i need the SS# for my California driver's license, opening a bank account etc We all know everything here requires a SS#.

Eagerly await your precious advise.

thanks

dano,

Most K1 women have no problem applying for SS cards after marriage using their husband's surname, but a few do. So if one wishes to minimize the possibility of having trouble they can apply in their maiden name without mentioning the marriage, and change their name with the SSA later after adjusting status when they will want to get a new card anyway.

I can't advise you what you should do, it's your own personal preference and risk tolerance that determines.

First of all, sorry for my curiousity why you need them all so urgently (driving licence and bank account), because (if it's me) I would wait for the marriage certificate to move on afterwards (I don't like the trouble to change name in all of those stuff). It's only couple weeks from now before you get your marriage certificate.

As for driving licence, you still can use your country driving licence for a year (check it with your DMV). Too bad in my origin country we drive on the other side of road. I live more than a year without driving licence here and I find it's quite easy to travel around with public trans.

For Bank Account... if you have Washington Mutual Bank around, check with them. My friend just told me that WM Bank doesn't require SSN (wish I knew this last year).

It's quite easy to change name on SSN once you already had it.
