SSN with no name change

Hello,

My fiancé is about to come to the US on a k1, I have been reading a lot about benefits of applying for the SSN before marriage as it causes problems after getting married or filing aos. Are the only problems with getting married before ssn related to changing of maiden name and not matching their database? We don't have any intentions of changing her name either now or in future, does that mean it wouldn't matter in our case when we apply for the SSN? We are still planning on applying for an SSN right after she comes here but we also want to get married asap so the long process of obtaining the EAD can start. If I get an appointment for the ssn after we get married, would it cause any problems?

The biggest problem is indeed with the name change like you said. Another problem with waiting till after marriage can occur if the time is cutting it close. The SSN has to be issued on day 76 of the allowed 90 day stay and it's not a one day process. Also sometimes SSA employees get confused and say that once you're married you're no longer a K1 and therefore not eligible for a SSN anymore. Nonsense but it has happened 🙄

Some SSA workers believe the rules of the K-1 visa changes when you get married, and they refuse to let you apply for a SSN as the immigrant is now married. So it doesn't have to be a name change issue only, you can still encounter an issue getting a SSN without a name change. In most cases you should be able to overcome this issue by speaking to a supervisor who knows how things work, but I don't see the reason to make it harder for yourselves when you can apply for a SSN before getting married.
