I also asked if I can travel with my cancelled visa.

Twice. However they were only update due to the consulate replying back to an email I had sent and when they processed my passport to send back, I received the tracking number the next day. 
 

the only random date change was on December 22nd

My husband's interview was on 11/9, so the case updated that day. Then it updated 11/17, 11/19, 12/17, and finally 12/23.
