Apologies quite confused. Isn’t the point of filing for the DCF to determine whether they will take it or not?

No. It's more like a secret club that you have to get invited to 😉

Ok perfect. So the medical is taken after approval.

Approval - in that they have set an interview date.   First you need the consulate to agree to process the DCF

Do I have to wait in the UK with my partner whilst it gets approved. Or can I file and just go.

You need to be there until they agree to process the I-130

I guess it is safe to assume that they reject or accept your application pretty fast then?

They may agree or reject the petition. The timing of the interview can be problematic as the end of the year approaches.   You aren't married yet and aren't vaxed. Precovid 3 months was a good timeframe.

You now need them to agree to process it.  Before, when there was an USCIS field office, you could have the "permission" part done in day.  I had an appointment in Mexico and by the time I got back to where we were living the petition was approved.

This is really a process that you should have filed last month and even that is pushing the schedule post covid.

One thing about US immigration is that the more you want/need/desire an action the longer it takes.
