Does anyone actually receive their SSN after arrival from checking YES on DS-260?

It seems by reading these forums that although it is supposed to happen that an SSN will be issued and mailed to you after entering the country if you checked "Yes" on ds-260, this doesn't actually work or do anything, and that 3 weeks later everyone then has to go through the process of applying in person.

I have a job interview on Thursday, and have not been able to get a bank account due to not having a SSN. More importantly, even, I am unable to get licensed under my regulated profession until I have an SSN (for various reasons).

Is it just my perception? Does anyone know of anyone who has actually received it through Ds-260 alone? I arrived just a couple days shy of 3 weeks ago and am growing impatient and stressed about it not arriving yet.

I've been waiting since July. Not even a green card yet and it's been past 90 days

Gosh that sucks, sorry to hear that. Can I ask why you haven't gone to the SSA office to apply for one in person once the first three weeks of required waiting passed?

yyctous has been here just shy of 3 weeks so still has a couple more days to wait before going to the SSA office.

For most, their SSN arrives on time, you might just be the exception to the norm. I know that is not what you want hear.

Take the interview, explain your situation. If you are qualified and the employer wants to hire you, I think they might give you a couple weeks to "get things straightened out".

Yeah, no. Even 10 years ago when immigration wasn't backlogged my husband did not receive his SS card after checking "yes". He finally went to a SS office and applied in person.

Yes,  and of course,  it was much faster pre covid

but your timeline says you entered the 9th of October

it will take some time to process your info at USCIS and prompt the SS to be made

Your petition was mailed in early 2019 and the USC should have gotten your ITIN by adding u to tax returns

with this number you could have been added (with a POA) to the USC bank account and use the ITIN for work

only thing needed to do after that is change the number at the bank when the SS card comes in

You don't NEED a SSN to open a bank account or start a job.  Please refer to the instructions on the I-9 form.  Your validated temporary visa (temp I-551) in your passport serves as both identification and employment authorization.  Many HR agencies are not familiar with this.  You can be hired and the SSN can be added to the I-9 after it's received.  Just show them the I-9 instructions.

As for receiving a SSN when the box is checked on the DS-260 - flip a coin.  Some do, some don't.  But also be aware that the local SSA are often poorly trained and may also try to tell you that they cannot issue you a SSN using your temporary I-551.  This is also untrue and is stated specifically on the SSA website.  I had this headache with my kids and trying to get their SSN's in place of their ITIN's.

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I understand I don't need an SSN to start a job. I do, however, need it to be licensed under my professional regulatory body, unfortunately, which I need to be able to work in my field. In terms of the bank account, the bank my husband is with will only do it without an SSN if I have an ITIN, which I don't, and they advised not getting an ITIN while my SSN is allegedly on the way. Therefore I figured I'd wait until my SSN arrived/didn't arrive, but I wanted to hear from others if they've actually had it arrive through a DS-260.
