I have an interview today and I simply want to know what to expect going forward.

I got my green card last year, mid pandemic. When I have tried to schedule an appointment with the Social Security Office, I was told they are completely closed, do not do emergency appointments and my only option would be to send my green card in BY MAIL. I was also told that it would take me about 2 weeks to possibly get it back. That is not an option, given that both mail is not a safe mode of sending original documents and that it is a literal misdemeanor to not have my green card on me at all times. As a result, I have decided to wait until they reopen.

My Social Security card was issued in my maiden name and still contains the resctriction "cannot work without authorization". My green card on another hand was issued in my married name. Will that be something my future employer will have issues with? I am stressing quite a bit.

Should not be an issue, but take a copy of your marriage certificate with you in case they need it to verify the name differences.

In general it  is illegal for a

* prospective  employer to demand to see your green card or social security card.

* a new employer to demand to see your social security card.  You do have to show I-9 documents. Your green card is a sufficient I-9 document from “list A” and this is all you need to provide.

You do not need to provide your social security card. You do need to provide your SSN.  You should not provide your SS card.  Your SS card should be securely locked away at home at nearly all times.

The more you know! Thank you. I really appreciate your input. This is very important information.

Call the SSO again and tell them that the SSA issued a new guidance explicitly prohibiting offices to request immigrants to mail or drop off their documents.
