Working in Canada after receiving Green Card

I'm pretty sure there are others on this site that have come across this issue- but figured I'd post to receive an answer without digging so much.

After a much delayed process I finally have my visa interview on Nov. 4th, however, because this process was so delayed, I did start a new work contract that ends Aug 24, 2022. I think I could squeeze out of it in June 2022 if I needed, but for the time being I really can't quit. I work for a Canadian NGO and it's a hybrid work model.

I am a Canadian citizen and a resident of BC. Is there anyone that after receiving their Green Card travelled between Canada and the US for work that could share their experience?

How did that work for health care?

When will you take your medical exam?

You will have 6 months from your medical exam to use your CR1/IR1 spousal visa.

Once you enter the US and activate your US green card status, you will become a US resident.  You will no longer qualify for provincial health care benefits and will be liable for any benefits you use after becoming a US green card holder.  Furthermore, the US taxes based on worldwide income, so you will need to report your Canadian income to the IRS.

Yes, I have noted those details that I have 6 months to enter the US and will lose my provincial health benefits when I do- wasn't sure if that was following my medical exam or actually getting my visa. My medical exam was today.

Do I face any restrictions working for a Canadian company as a US resident? My guess is no, because I am still a Canadian Citizen...

Check with your employer in Canada.  They may not allow you to work remotely in the US because of Canadian tax law, so check with HR.  You can travel back and forth as soon as you enter the US and become an LPR, as long as you stay in the US much longer than you are in Canada.  Also ask a qualified tax accountant about the tax implications as it gets complicated.  Good luck!

If you're going to go back and forth it is not a problem. Your employer will tax you as a non resident, you will do taxes in both country but thanks to a treaty you won't have to pay in both.

The only issue is when you have to stay in Canada more than in the US. Like weeks on end. It can be a issue keeping your GC.

If you use the search function in the Canada forum we have had many Canadians keep their CDN job as even with the way taxes work out it was better. They traveled daily back and forth.
