N-400 Interview AFTER I-751 approval. Documentation required?

I’m currently away visiting my parents and just got notification that I have an interview for N-400. I can’t fly back until the night before my appointment and don’t have all the required documents on hand.

the documents I have on hand:

- Green card

- notice of Interview document

- drivers license

I’ve lost my British passport, I hope that won’t be an issue!

Since I was approved for I-751 (removal of conditions) while awaiting my N-400 interview, do I still need to bring proof of marriage?

If so, will they accept copies of documents that I can’t bring? For example, can I bring a copy of my wife’s birth certificate if her mother emails me a photo of it?

thanks

I am not as familiar with N400 and defer to others to respond to your questions.

I was wondering how you were planning to fly back to the US without a passport?

It is hard to say if the IO conducting the interview will have the I751 file information, but at this point, bring what you can according to the list on interview NOA.  The worst case scenario is you will get an RFE to allow you to submit the requested documents later.  I know when my wife had her N400 interview, the IO did not ask for any additional documents, but in her case, it was a combo I751/N400 interview.

Good Luck!

Everything would have already been sent in your N-400 packet as a photocopy so how would another photocopy help? if they want to see something, then they want to verify originals. I will say my IO didn’t want to see anything but I did have original civil documents with me as requested.

I can’t really comprehend why you don’t already have those documents in hand. Maybe you should just cancel that interview until citizenship is your priority and you have time to prepare for it.

I was waiting over a year for any movement in my N400 case. I decided to visit family in the US for a couple months and didn’t expect to get an interview during my trip. I can’t leave any earlier because I have a very important doctors appointment as I need surgery. This appointment is 2 days before my N400 interview. I land in Chicago (location of interview) at 11pm and my interview is at 9am the next day.

This is a huge priority but it’s just been unfortunate timing. Im hoping I can bring the original documents that I have on hand and that be enough. It sounds like they don’t check additional documents at the interview.

My I-751 case was already approved so I don’t see why they’d need to see proof of marriage since the conditions on my residence have already been removed.

From reading other people's experiences, they tend to ask about taxes and filing status for the most recent period, they may or may not ask you to show transcripts. I think its  a good idea to have those at the interview, especially if you've field taxes after submitting your application. IRS has an online tool for requesting and accessing transcripts.

Awesome, that's a good idea. I'll bring my tax 2020 and 2019 tax transcripts!

Your I-751 might be approved but if you applied for Citizenship under the 3 year rule thar you are still married to your US Citizen Spouse then you need to bring proof that you are still together.

You will need almost the same documents again, plus additional financial records for the third year. Check the required documents listen on form M-477. I don't think you have the time to prepare yourself. Your best will be to cancel or postpone the interview. Make sure you get a doctor's report of your medical condition to use for the USCIS.

I don't recall much about the documents they actually checked. Definitely my greencard (I think that is mainly to verify your identity). Largely the interview was re-asking the questions on the citizenship application form ("have you been member of organization that advocates violence etc etc"), plus the language and civics tests. I don't think they checked my British passport, and I can't recall if they checked my marriage certificate. However what really matters is the documents they MAY ask for. They could ask for anything that you submitted in your citizenship application - so I ensured I had originals of marriage certificate, some paper bank statements, health insurance and life insurance (I'm named on my wife's work policies). Have you considered trying to reschedule the Interview?

I ended up driving back to get my original documents. i didn’t get home until 3am that night. My interview was at 9am so I had to wake up at 6am to get there on time since I had to drive through crazy Chicago rush hour traffic. I was EXHAUSTED!

I drove back home to get all my original documents, but my interviewer didn’t need them. The only new documents I gave him were some new joint bank statements. I brought originals of everything and I asked if he needed them, he said “no I’ve already got all those docs in your case”.

My interviewer wasn’t very nice and really dug into my case, but everything went well and I just got notice that my oath ceremony will be scheduled :)
