Many if not all of the forms we submitted online to the NVC that were filled out & signed were done so digitally (on an iPad & computer). If that's the case, there's not really an 'original copy'... do you think that's okay when showing up to the interview? I assume I'd just bring two copies regardless but there wouldn't an original and a copy in that case. any thoughts on this?

For those I only brought one copy, as there’s no original.
For any that can be revised for ex. I864 forms, I brought the copy I submitted and an updated one. They didn’t ask for either but better to come prepared.

Hey folks

With all the stories in this thread of people not getting the right type of police certificate, I'm thinking of pre-emptively applying for the RCMP certificate... Does anyone know if this document has a particular validity or can only be done after a particular stage of the process for eg. during NVC processing?

Thank you

Oh! Here's where I got the idea that it's only good for one year: “If you previously submitted a police certifciate [sic] to NVC, it is more than one (1) year old, and you still live in that country, you must obtain and bring a more recent police certificate to your visa interview as the one you previously submitted will have expired.”

So I guess it isn't exactly clear if they're good for one or two years, but I'd err on the side of caution!

Hi Everyone,

I am preparing for my interview in Montreal in April, and having read several reviews, I'm curious about the question they ask during the interview "What was your longest stay in the US?"...  I've never exceeded the 6 month limit across a calendar year, and closely track my stays, but I did spend a 3 month stint there during the summer of 2021.  As well, sometimes my stays are as quick as weekend trips, or can range from 2-3 weeks.  But again, I make sure to stay within the 6 months limit.  Does this pose any issues?  How should I prepare to answer this question?  Can anyone share what they intend to understand by asking this?

Hope this makes sense...

They are only looking for honest and truthful answers to this question and all others they ask. If your longest stay was 3 months then mention that one.

They may also ask you the countries you’ve visited in the last 5 years

Hey all!

Thank you so much for all your advice and support about the whole police certificate ruckus. An update: I went in for my fingerprints today to get the proper police certificate at a different place in Montreal than I did last time. They said it should be here in 10 days (which is waaaay shorter than the previous place I went to). I will most likely have it well before my interview in three weeks. If not, they will call the RCMP and ask what’s up. I’m so glad I checked the FAQs and made sure I had the right one because it would have sucked to have my immigration postponed because of such a small detail. I can’t thank this forum enough.

advice to anybody who needs a new police certificate ASAP: make sure the fingerprint place does them DIGITALLY and not by ink. I was told that the reason mine took so long last time was most likely because they were doing them by ink and not by the scanner.

I'm new to this thread and am just catching up about this police certificate stuff!  Does anybody have an example of what a CORRECT police certificate should look like?  Now I'm nervous and want to make sure I get ahead of getting the right one ahead of my interview in April...

Has anyone been in “issued” status for over a week? My visa was not approved on the spot as they had to complete some checks but it got “issued” within 2 hours, on the same day as the interview. My children got their passports back with visas in 3 days but I am still waiting for courier tracking information. Status still shows “issued” with the message that visa is in final processing. I have yet to see a scenario like this since most people get refused > administrative processing > issued and then passport returned within 3-4 days. I’m really confused.

Always be truthful. Visiting, interviewing, moving, always be truthful.

The CO already knows how long you've visited.  They have all that information at their fingertips.  Their job is to verify the information you have provided previously and what's on file.  If you don't admit to a 3 month stay and they see it on your I-94 record, you'll likely hurt your chances for approval or risk sending yourself into extended AP.  They just want truthful answers.  So, honesty is 100% the best policy here.

For those worried about police certificates: I originally applied my certificate through Reliability Screening back in July 2022. From receipt of fingerprints to receiving the certificate in the mail took close to 5 weeks.

Since it was the wrong certificate, I reapplied with Reliability Screening last week and my fingerprints were sent to RCMP on Friday 17th. The new (and correct) certificate arrived in the mail today - so, 4 business days turnaround.

I really recommend Reliability Screening. They have been professional and courteous and endlessly patient with all my questions.

Good luck to everybody.

@thenextman  What was wrong with the first certificate from RCMP ? Was it to do with  the application type:  ?

Thanks

Yes, it was the wrong type. Actually, it "became" the wrong type late last year; it was the correct type when I got it and uploaded it (and had approved) by the NVC.

The old one said: "For Active Criminal Record"

The new one says "Other (provide details)"

NVC never caught my application type as it was Visa-Border Crossing-Foreign Travel-Work.  The US consulate in Montreal caught the error on January 9,2023, which was my interview date.

I went back to my local police station in Ontario the next day and they re-submitted my application to other/ RCMP National repository Entire Holdings on January 10 and they transferred the application digitally.  I have not heard back as of today on my status which is 45 days. The  RCMP division responsible for this process are not taking phone calls only emails and voice mail. They're busy and they haven't responded to my email.

My question is why it took  Reliable screening 4 business days to get your results and I have not received my results using the local polices services in my home town ? I'm very confused with this !!

Thanks

Wow that's terrible, I'm very sorry. In fact, when I _originally_ submitted my civil documents to NVC, I also had the wrong certificate (it wasn't backed by fingerprints and says "Canadian Police Certificate for Visa Applicants / Foreign Travel / Work Permits"). It was the one my local RCMP said I needed, and it's my fault for not checking but the NVC caught it as invalid once they reviewed my file.

I am shocked that my latest certificate came so quickly. I was greatly concerned I wouldn't have my updated certificate in time for my interview.

I've also tried to contact the RCMP division about this in the past; I had the same result. An email I sent to them last year took well over 8 weeks to get a response.

Note that Reliability Screening in this case does the same thing (as far as I can tell) as your local RCMP. I needed to use them because I'm outside of Canada currently. I submitted my fingerprint card to them, they digitized it and sent the application to RCMP. At that point they can't offer any update - just that you normally receive the certificate within about 4 weeks and to contact RCMP(!) if it takes longer than 8 weeks.

If I was you, I'd get new fingerprints done and send to RS. The cost is about $180. And see if things move along more quickly. Of course it depends if you have the time and funds to do that.

Sorry again about your experience
