My wife went to her n-400 interview today at the local Santa Ana field office.  She has a pending I-751 so I went with her just in case I was needed for a combo interview and she bought her ROC documents also.  We checked in at security and they let both of us inside.  At the first check in they asked for her notice and ID.  They then said I could not go with her bc it was an N400 case and not 751 and told me to wait downstairs just in case the officer asked to see me also.  After 30 minutes of waiting my wife called me to go upstairs bc the officer had asked to see me at the interview also. We ended up doing a combo interview with the N400 questions first.  After my wife passed the N400 test the officer asked questions about my divorce and kids and where we met.  He didn’t ask for any of the paperwork and evidence we had bought with us.  He then said he would need a few minutes to process paper work and told us to wait outside.  After 10 minutes he came back to get us and proceeded to ask my wife some more yes and no questions.  He then said he recommended her for citizenship and that we needed to go upstairs for the oath ceremony.  The oath took about 30 minutes with another group of people.   I’m not sure why some people had their ceremony scheduled for a later date and some people like my wife had same day.  Out of the people at the ceremony there were 5-6 that were same day.  I just want to say visa journey was a great help with the immigration process and everyone else on this site was so cool and helpful.  I wish good luck to everyone on their journey and don’t worry it will be such a relief when it’s all said and done :)

Can I request a specific date for the oath ceremony on my naturalization interview?

Hi, I have my citizenship interview on July 27th. On September 2 I'm supposed to go on a trip to Spain that I have dreamed on doing with my husband for years and we spent thousands of dollars on tickets and hotels that we cannot cancel (the citizenship process took a lot less that what we expected). For what I have read on line my oath ceremony would be any time between the same day (July 27th) and two months after (28 Sept). What can I do to make it possible to travel? Could I ask the agent the day of the interview to either do my oath ceremony that same day or after my trip? What happens if the oath ceremony is on the dates of my trip, can i move it and how is that process? how long will it take to know my new ceremony date?

Congrats on your interview date!! Usually you will be able to get your Oath Ceremony either the same day or a few days later after your interview.  Just be aware, that even though you become a US citizen before you travel,  you also have to apply for a passport to be able to travel to Spain. This process can take weeks, sometime months.  Of course if you have a dual citizenship and already have a passport from your origin country, you may be able to travel, as long as you are exempt from needing a VISA or you do have VISA to travel. The Department Of State or USCIS will most likely not care if you knowingly bought a ticket to Spain, before you knew you were able to travel, but I am crossing my fingers for you guys, good luck!!

You can try to request the officer but it may really depend on what your field office does in general. Every office has accomodations they can make, but that are dependent on need/purpose of the request. If you get your oath ceremony date (unless it's a same day) you can see how it fits with your trip. If it's within reasonable time of your trip, you can even request an urgent passport at a passport agency where your passports would be available the same-day. If the oath is past your return date, you can travel, come back and take the oath assuming you comply with USCIS covid restrictions.

I'd suggest you tell the officer after the interview about your travel and it's really upto the officer and the office at the time to accomodate your request.
