I wish my local police department would give us  citizens such info whenever we needed it.

It was more a matter of knowing who to ask. Was I supposed to know this? I have no idea, maybe, maybe not. But it does make me feel more comfortable knowing that this isn't one of "our" homeless, so to speak. That isn't to victim-blame the woman who was attacked, or that it's somehow better that it was a person from outside of the community.

This is a fairly anonymous site overall, but I would caution you about publicly disclosing what your friend told you.  Might not end well for her.

Noted and I get it, but it's my friend's girlfriend. Just to be clear.

I know, and I trust your reasons for posting were legitimate, only to keep facts straight.  However, in this society which seeks litigation against just about everything, be careful how you word things.  Or so - "A friend of a friend told me..."

Also.... if a homeless person from Northern Wyoming travelled to SM and attacked and killed your husband - would you feel "more comfortable" than if a local had done it?

Alexandria Diaz, who was listed as a missing person out of the Fresno area, was charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon by the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office-Airport Office on Monday.

Diaz remains in custody on $110,000 bail. She was scheduled to appear at LAX Superior Court on Nov. 16.

...

Police said Diaz has undefined mental illness and are investigating whether she was off her medication. Her family told police they were concerned about her safety, Flores said.

...

Fox11 and the New York Post incorrectly reported that Yi was stabbed and that Diaz was homeless, police said. She is not homeless and was reported missing by her family in Fresno on Oct. 13.

I wonder if any of the publications that were so anxious to call Diaz a homeless woman have corrected their reporting. I mean, I see it's a big deal when the NY Times takes 10 or 12 hours to correct something.

Although it seems to be clear that she was not exactly homeless, it seems like she was on the way??  Many of the homeless have mental issues and either voluntarily or forcefully are separated from their family.  I(we) don't know her mental condition but it appears she left voluntarily and disappeared.

My best friend in Ohio just had a shocking mental illness tragedy in his family, who all live in Amsterdam.  His brother-in-law, who he was close to, murdered his youngest sister and then committed suicide.  His BIL was manic-depressive and had not slept for 12 days.  Probably off his meds.  I think it is common that they don't want to take meds when they are manic because they are on such a high.  So sad.  My friend just returned from the funeral and of course he is heartbroken.  So sad.  My friend gave a eulogy and he said 400 people were there and another 250 online.

Very sad indeed.  We need more mental health awareness and programs in this country.

I have a friend who is type II bipolar, and while her diagnosis was a relief, it doesn't make it any easier in some ways. She has to be reminded by her husband when she's manic to keep taking the meds because she has kids who rely on her to be stable and present. I've known her since we were in college, and the hypomanic episodes just seemed like she was having a lot of fun back then -- it's not full-blown mania like with type I. She'd be wittier and funnier than usual, and she'd be the one dragging us up on the bar to dance, or she'd randomly flash guys at parties, or want to stay up all night talking and playing music and bouncing ideas off of us all ping-ping-ping. She wasn't scary at those times, just wound up tight and ready to explode with energy at any time. And then she'd be sunk into a pit of despair for weeks or a month or more right after. We were all way too young to understand what was going on, we just thought she was a romantic, artistic free spirit. Now her hypomanic episodes can cause serious problems for more than just herself.

All of it's hard. I suffer from an anxiety disorder, which causes distress not only to me but to the people around me who don't always know what to do or how to help (if I even want help, which I usually don't). I am much, much better than I was when I was younger, but it pops out of me sometimes, usually unexpectedly. On top of that, I also have mild PTSD from an assault. I am lucky enough to have a patient, caring and compassionate husband who can bring me back into myself when the anxiety is spinning me out of control. Most people have no idea I have anxiety issues, until something triggers me and then I know it can be scary and confusing to watch me melt down in tears over seemingly "nothing." (Ask my husband about the time I started crying about not being able to find parking when we were going to a wedding and worrying we would be 3 hours late. We were right on time even though we had to walk an extra block.)

I have the utmost respect and appreciation for all the people around me who want me to be well. Having a strong team is important for people with mental illness. For people with "mild" illnesses like myself, sometimes that's all you need (I don't take meds any longer -- therapy and breathing techniques are good enough). But people like Diaz need a lot more, and it can be exhausting for everyone around them when they don't stick to their prescribed protocols.

Glad you doing better. I have had the anxiety thing before. Mom died, job was shutting down and going thru a divorce  all in a short time span.  I was ridding down the road and the air I was Breathing felt like it had no air in it. Thought I was having a heart attack. It's no laughing matter. Come to find out I was having panic attacks.  Even the doctor commented it seemed I was having anxiety attacks, but that was such an outgoing confident person he was hesitant to say that is what it was. It's no fun and certainly nothing to joke about.
