hello , i have my driver license here in Montenegro , im asking , do my current  license  Works at U.S or i need completly to start a  Driving School in U.S ?

There is no "US driver's License". It depends on the state where you intend to live.  Some states require new residents from foreign country to take the tests.  Some states have agreements with specific countries which allow a direct trade-in for a state driver's license.  I suggest you look at the DMV site for the state in which you intend to live.

Depends on your state. Google DMV and your state. Some states you’ll have to do a drivers ed course, most you’ll have to do a new driver test (written and/or behind the wheel), I believe there are a couple of states where you can just exchange your license. State requirements also differ on how long you have before you need to get a state license as a resident.

Some states also allow people with foreign driver's licenses to drive for a certain period of time before needing to apply for a state driver's license. They may need to get an International Driver's License in their home country before departure.

Never seen a International Driver License,  I have seen International Permits that is used along side a valid DL.

Ah, thanks for the correction. Got the terms mixed up. You are correct, it's an International Driver's Permit: https://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpf.html

The International driving permit will not help. It's pretty much just a translation for a foreign DL. 

 

 

As you no longer will be a visitor you will only have a short time before being required to get a State DL. It is not likely your country's DL will be just switched over the the State license. The list is pretty short of what countries DL they will honour. Be prepared to retake all the test. Most likely the written and practical portion. 

 

The stat you're moving to will have a website you can search all this information and what you can expect. Ignore all the spots talking about driving of a foreign DL those parts usually are for visiting. Which you will not be.

If you are a resident of a country the IDP is not valid in that country.  Both Mary and I have Mexican Permanent Residency as well so out IDPs are not valid there.   We do have Mexican Driver's Licenses.

 

If you are here as K1 then you could potentially drive with an IDP until you file AOS (or the 90 days expires) subject to the state you are operating in..  If you are here on a spousal or family visa the IDP is essentially void.
