Passport issue: Last name and first name reversed

This sounds crazy but it is true, and I hope it will not turn into a nightmare:

I sent my passport for a renewal and I only requested routine service since I don't have any travel plans in the foreseeable future.

Up until today (4 weeks from when I sent in the application), the status update showed Not available.

I called the 1-877-487-2778 number to request an expedite and pay for it, the agent could not locate my application at first, but when I gave her my full SSN number, she told me that the application has my last name and first name reversed.

She transferred me to another agent to fix it, just to find out that they can't fix it.

my question is: are they really going to issue a passport with the last name and first name reversed? they have my old passport and it is correct?

how big of an issue is it?

Thank you all for your replies

Anything is possible. In the event the passport is issued with wrong first and last name, you will need to reapply for the passport but don't need to pay the fees.

I sent them an email to NPIC@state.gov and received an automated reply. The number was listed in the email. go figure

Anyway, I called again and the agent this time laughed at the issue and she told me she will be adding a note for "them" to fix it.

I went ahead and paid for the expedite ($60 + $17.5 for 2-day shipping).

I hope this does not turn into a fiasco

Received passport and it was correct. No issues with it. Turned out to be a no-issue.

By the way, it is the new passport design
