Hence my comment about power plants.  I was speaking about operating emissions.  To be fair most of the things you speak of, except the batteries are in all cars.

 

I would be curious to know the environmental impact of producing the power and the many miles of wire and infrastructure needed to transmit it vs the emissions and fossil fuel production etc.

 

Now if we ever can advance to the point of harnessing massive amounts of solar energy and storing it, in very small environmentally friendly devices, it would be a game changer.

It is interesting, I did the math on an EV vs an ICE engine as we are looking to replace the wife's car in six months or so.  Based on our gas prices (~$3.00/gal right now), and the cost per kWh of our power using 12,000 miles a year, and a comparably equipped vehicle, it would take more than 15 years to break even based on the operating cost savings of an EV over the ICE.  This added to the EV range limitations especially on long drives, additional time to charge in a hurry if one can find a fast DC charger in time, and the lack of versatility, even EV SUVs don't have a lot of ground clearance for poorly maintained dirt roads, I think we will stay with the ICE for now.

And therein lies the key to the whole EV movement.
 

A few years back, I did the exact same analysis on ICE vs. hybrid.  My neighbor and I had the exact same year model and trim level Accord, except his was a hybrid.  We drove them, got accurate mileage estimates, compared price, etc.  At the time (circa 2004-2005) it was going to take him a bit over seven years to break even just on gas, and that didn't include the cost to maintain/replace any of the electric drive system.

Yeah, I did not include things like tires, brakes, or oil changes which would make the numbers a little better, but still beyond 10 years, and certainly makes no sense if leasing.

Completely incorrect? At best what I said is partially incorrect though I never said it applied to all of California so I would say it's not even partially incorrect. How generous of those counties to allow you to do an oil change. Here I thought if you are working on your car on your own property and not harming anyone that you could do whatever work you saw fit. Guess not in control freak land.

i have a 48" non ZTR.  i don't like ZTR's as i usually pull a small lawn trailer with it.
still takes me about 3 hours to mow it all.

Who the heck has time to mow 3 acres of monculture lawn? I would be looking to sub out to a hay operation or call in the goat patrol.

 

  We have 7 acres and only mow a lawn, 15'x35'...10 minutes  once a week with no raking. If we wanted to be tied down to livestock we would let them do the work, but I like the freedom to take off.  The trees we planted have an economic return as well.
