California took another step toward its goal of ridding the state of all gas-powered engines thanks to a new bill signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday.

The new law will ban the sale of all off-road, gas-powered engines, including generators, lawn equipment, pressure washers, chainsaws, weed trimmers, and even golf carts. Under the new law, these

machines must be zero-emissions, meaning they will have to be either battery-powered or plug-in, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The new law is expected to affect nearly 50,000 small businesses. California's budget includes $30 million to help professional landscapers and gardeners quit using gas-powered equipment, but even

then, the budget is still not capable of bearing the full financial burden.

The National Association of Landscape Professionals also noted how zero-emission commercial equipment is both more expensive and less efficient than gas-powered equipment. A gas-powered

riding lawn mower costs between $7,000-$11,000 while the zero-emissions version costs more than twice that amount, according to the outlet.

i sure hope there isn't a natural disaster where one would need a gas powered generator............

Unfortunately for those in the PRoCA, it does not necessarily take a natural disaster to force power loss.  What I am curious is how they will treat those that already have those devices/equipment or those that maybe cross into NV or AZ and purchase them.  Btw, shouldn't they also ban the sale of portable gasoline containers?

As to the zero emission myth, do people really believe that?

Pure electric are zero emission from the car. Not so much from the power plant that produces the energy

Actually, only from an operating standpoint.  If a complete analysis is conducted, there are also a lot of GHG emissions just to get the stuff out of the ground for EVs not to mention the oil needed to make a lot of the plastics in an EV or the power necessary for recycling at end-of-life of the vehicle.

Due to the coup in Burma I’ve gained insight into the mechanics of organized protests, marches, etc.  And regardless of the cause, most protests rely on gas generators to power amplifiers and loud speakers.

Since this law will ban gasoline powered generators, it will help California suppress exercise of freedom of assembly and speech.

Haven’t you heard, CA is a perfectly run regressive state.

Not quite true, but over the life of the car (estimated, since EVs haven't finished their first life cycles yet), they ARE likely to produce less emissions than ICEVs.

EVs have been tried for over 140 years now.  They haven't really been practical until the last decade.  We might actually see them take over in the next few years, but the TCO won't be known for some time.  My main concern is - how sustainable are the batteries going to be?

We drove a little over 1,000 miles last Wednesday/Thursday and did it in 14 hours with 5/6 five minute stops to switch drivers, use the rest room or get some fuel.  If we had an EV, we would have added close to 5 hours to our trip.  Unacceptable in our opinion.  EVs do have a future in the market, but not completely.

You simply have to buy the CORRECT EV for your lifestyle.  Might I suggest pre-ordering the Lucid Air today?  520 miles on a charge.

Yeah, not bad, but pretty expensive to get the 520 mile range (if one is hypermiling).  The big detraction for us though is not much ground clearance for the roads that may be a bit washed out.

Ok I will bite. What kind of emissions do they produce ?

Actually, quite a bit of VOCs from the plastics/rubber/fabrics in them.  What we all used to call "That New Car Smell".  They have gotten better with lower emitting plastics/rubber/fabrics overall, but the VOCs are still there, and there is a lot more plastic//rubber/fabrics in an EV.  At some point CARB will put an EV in a chamber and measure the VOCs emitted and start hammering those.  Heck, all the bureaucrats at CARB are not going to simply go away with all people in CA driving EVs.
