Most field offices hold oath ceremonies with name changes just fine during the pandemic while courts are closed, but as you experienced not all do.

I would advice against getting a new naturalization certificate unless you really want one in your new name and want to spend the extra money. Once you receive your passport (that you apply for with your current certificate and name change document from court), and update your info with SSA (and possibly DMV), you will likely never use the certificate for anything ever in your life. Sure it can happen, but it's unlikely. For citizenship and ID you use your passport, which will have your new name. So is it worth it to spend all that money on something that will just collect dust among other documents? That's up to you. I know I wouldn't have done it.

I think you're doing the right thing getting rid of names that just cause trouble in the US system, it does make life easier. Where I'm from almost everyone has two "middle names". Two middle names are really an annoyance here in the US, especially if they're long, and they caused me issues on both i-94, my SS card and at DMV, banks etc. So during my naturalization process I got rid of one of them, now I just have First Middle Last. So much better. It may be more work for you, but if you plan on living the rest of your life in the US you're doing yourself a big favor.

i did my naturalisation oath ceremony with name change at the local uscis field office in virginia.while the judge processed the oath taking virtually on a big screen.we all i mean other cadidates including me for oath got our naturalisation cirtificate with new name on the spot.but we did not receaved the court order of the name change.do you have any idea if i am going to get the court order of name change or not.i called uscis for the name change court order document i did not receaved but they dont give any information about that and even dont arrange an infopass to inqure at local uscis.please give your valuable input if you know what to do in this situation. or the naturalisation cirtificate with new name is enough for everything.thanks

You should receive the name change document (Form N-662) together with your naturalization certificate, it's not something they send afterwards. When they handed you the Naturalization certificate and you asked about the name change document, what did they say about it?

You could try to file a FOIA and see if the document is in your file.

I don't know if you'll need it or not, most people seem to be able to get their US passports just fine without providing a copy of the N-662, while in my case the USPS employee specifically told me to send it in with the rest of the documents. Now when I sent in my documents to change my name and status with the SSA they also required me to send a copy of the name change document. So in my case I needed it, but I bet it differs from different SSA offices etc.

hi i thank you for early reply

i remember the day i got oath, i checked all the paper in the packet they give to me , there was a passport application form, there was vote form and oath and pledge paper was there including a small booklet but there was no copies of name change document in the packet.later they called us with our new name and given us naturalisation cirtificate.while i was leaving after oath ceremony i talked to the lady who took my green card and oath notice and one another form when i entered the uscis office that, i did not receaved the name change court document and the uscis lady told me that i will receave two copies of name change document in the mail within 2 weeks.but now its more than 3 weeks i did not receaved it.

and what is FOIA and how can i file that and on what website.and how long it takes to get responce.

i am still surprised that why uscis did not given me the name change document on oath day as they given the naturalisation cirtificate with name change.
