U.S. Dollars drawn on a U.S. Bank

I am in Canada visiting my husband for the next 5 weeks and we have a problem. We just received the immigrant visa fee bill for $380 and on there is says the money order or cashier's check must be in U.S. dollars drawn on a U.S. bank. Since we are both in Canada we have having trouble finding a U.S. bank in this small town. I don't even know if there are U.S. banks in Canada. Has anyone else been in this predicament? I called the NVC and she recommended Chase Manhattan (which we don't have here). But, I just now called and a different lady said..as long as it is in U.S. dollars it doesn't matter where it comes from. Has anyone else in Canada bought a money order from RBC (where my husband banks)? I just don't want to send $380 dollars and them not accept it since RBC is not an American bank. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm probably reading into this too much, I just don't want to screw up.

Hi,

If you walk in to a large bank, like Royal or TD and ask for a U.S. money order, normally this money order is drawn on a U.S. bank (ie: major banks generally have an affiliate U.S. bank).

Now I can only speak for TD as that is where we get our money orders and they are drawn on their U.S. bank affiliate (this is stated on the front of the money order with name and Address of U.S. bank).

If you are unsure about your bank give them a call or visit and ask, I'm sure they will know what you are talking about.

The Royal has a US affliate, RBC Centura. I don't know if that helps.

A money order should be fine as long as it is in US funds.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

I have bought a US money order from RBC when making a purchase from ebay.

Just tell them you need a US money order and everything will be ok :)

Cost is about $5 Canadian, and they can deduct it from your husbands RBC account.

Thanks, Colin. Just to double check, you paid immigration fees with a money order from RBC? I know its not a problem to get a money order from any bank and cash in the U.S. but its just that fine print on the DS-230 fee bill that says U.S. money drawn on a U.S. bank. That is my only concern. But it sounds like you did that, hallelujah!
