Hey guys,

curious if someone could help out here. I’m in a little bit of a tricky spot.

i need to get a new social security card for a car loan (misplaced mine), but I had the unfortunate situation that my sent NOA got lost in travel.

i talked to USCIS today and a service request was made but will probably not receive my new notice until 30 days.

i know, in order to get a new social security card, you need to prove status of residence, but right now my greencard is expired.

Any ideas how I could go about getting a new Social Security Card asap?

Make an infopass appoint at USCIS, and get an ADIT in your passport.  That will be evidence of your status as a legal resident.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

We made an Infopass appointment for my wife last month.  Within 24 hours of making the call, my wife's passport had been stamped.

Thanks. According to their website you can’t schedule infopass anymore.

Is there a way you’ve been successful in doing so?

  • 2 weeks later...

Talked to a SSN agent yesterday about getting a new card.

He said they use a system and he was concerned about putting in expired green card dates.

He said to mail the GC, Notice Letter, and other ID doc and he would try. Does anyone know that if the NOA has been sent, the conditional green card extends 2 years and they can put in 9/13/2023 instead of 9/13/2021 and the system will pick up?

Personally, I would NEVER EVER mail those documents. The mail is known for losing documents and not being held accountable.

About two months ago I renewed my SS card. Mine had the legend “not valid for work authorization” or something like that. They wanted me to mail my gc. Heck no!!! We went back and forth with a couple of calls and after I realized I wasn’t going to get anywhere, I contacted my congressman and asked them to request an in person appointment for me at the SS office. Voila!!!

Do NOT mail your original immigration documents.  It's against DHS regulations.  The agent you talked to was misinformed.  SSA released memos stating that non-citizens must not be requested to submit their immigration documents by mail or dropbox.  If an SSA employee refuses to schedule an in-person appointment for an application that requires presenting your actual GC, ask for a supervisor or cite the following memos --

EM-21041: Express Interviews for Evidence and Enumeration Actions -- https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/links/05262021015248PM

EM-21056: In-Office Appointments Guidance -- https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/links/09082021124856PM

You are correct @Chancy, but it seems none or very few of the SSA agents are aware of this new procedure. I sent copies for them but had to present my wifes original Passport, Birth Certificate and other documents during the in-person appointment. The agent then certified the copies that he had actually seen the originals.
