Hello 😊

I have finalized my divorce (K1 visa and currently a Permanent Resident, restrictions removed) and I want to start changing my name back to my maiden name. I want to know which one to do first. I found a website that says to change SS card first. My passport is already back to my maiden name bec I had to renew it. Do I have to change my name in any of the immigration offices/docs? How do I do it please and which ones, if any? Thank you so much in advance😊

You are not required to change the name on your GC, but you may do so if you want to.  File form I-90 for a replacement GC due to legal name change.  You will need to pay the $540 filing fee.  You will need to send in your GC and a copy of your divorce decree.  Instructions here -- https://www.uscis.gov/i-90

To change the name on your SSN card, book an appointment at an SSA office.  You will need to present your divorce decree and GC.  Also bring your passport with your maiden name.  If a misinformed SSA employee refuses to schedule an in-person appointment for you and tells you to mail in your documents instead, remind them that it is against DHS regulations to mail your GC.  If they insist, cite the following SSA memos --

EM-21041: Express Interviews for Evidence and Enumeration Actions -- https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/links/05262021015248PM

EM-21056: In-Office Appointments Guidance -- https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/links/09082021124856PM

Thank you Chancy!!

Sorry, work got so busy. Thanks so much for answering.

Does that mean I can change all my ID’s back to my maiden name, like SS, DL, bank accounts, BUT leave my GC in my married name if I don’t want to pay the fee yet? I didn’t know it was that expensive!

Also, if I apply for citizenship. Can I do it under my maiden name even if my GC is still under my married name? Thank you so much again!!! 😊😊😊
