Good luck 🍀!

Thank you, and also thanks to everyone in this thread, the whole thing is incredibly scary, even if it shouldn't be super complicated. USCIS actually planned my biometrics appointment and sent receipts that show that everything was paid, but the only issue right now was that the checks were not valid. Stupid mistake, but we're getting right back on track, this time with a working payment.

Considering I have a receipt for the I-485, I wonder if I should just carry that with me, even if it is technically rejected

If you already have the i485 receipt notice and got the biometrics as well, it's not a rejection. Do not file anything until you receive the formal notice from the uscis. Refiling advice was based on rejection which means they would send back your package without sending you the receipt notice.

No it truly is a rejection, I can see the timeline on the USCIS website and can see that they send the receipts way before the rejection. All cases on the website are also marked as closed. I am very sure the rejection notice will follow soon. After speaking with the lawyer, we decided we will wait for the package to be send back to us, then we file everything with the rejection notice (I believe it is a green paper, which you are supposed to put on top of everything?) On top.

I do find it a bit strange that we got the receipts and everything already, but I assume they did all of this before cashing in the check, which then turned out to be unusable. We'll also have to pay $30 filing fee as stated on the website, which makes a lot of sense, since this clearly was our fault.

Mind taking a screenshot of the USCIS website and posting it here. Cover up the receipt number and any other identifiable information. I literally never heard of them accepting a case and then going "lol nope" and rejecting it.

Contradictions without citations only make you look dumb.

Here is a snipped below the I-485 and the rejection notice, it looks exactly like this one all the applications. I truly believe they have done everything normally, but then the check was invalid, therefore forcing them to close the case.
