Is a print of the approval notice enough? The approval announcement from the USCIS site?  Or di we have to wait for the actual GC?

Best to wait for the actual GC.  SSA does not accept the I-485 approval notice for SSN application.

You can get an SSN but not with your married name on the card.   At least that has been our experience here in Texas.   Social Security Office remains closed with appointment only due to Covid.

As your wife is adjusting from a B1/B2 visa, she will have to wait for the actual green card to arrive before she can go to the local Social Security office and apply in person.

If a SS employee tells her to mail in the GC so that they can process her SSN, do NOT agree and insist on an EXI appointment in person. @Mike E had a good post about it some time back but I can't find it on mobile right now.

I'd be interested in reading that.

Here are the relevant SSA memos, in case a misinformed employee refuses to schedule an in-person appointment for your wife's application --

EM-21041: Express Interviews for Evidence and Enumeration Actions -- https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/links/05262021015248PM

EM-21056: In-Office Appointments Guidance -- https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/links/09082021124856PM

You know, I wouldn't have a worry about the USPS losing a passport or GC but I would worry about SSA losing them.
