I'm filling out the new version of I-485, I'm conufused what should I do for question 16 under section asking about "Social Security Number".

16. Do you want the SSA to issue you a Social Security card?

The instruction said: If your application is approved, the SSA may assign you an SSN and issue you a Social Security card, or issue you a replacement card. If you want the SSA to assign you a Social Security number and issue you a Social Security card, or issue you a new or replacement Social Security card, then answer “Yes”.

I'm adjusting from F-1 visa and I already had a SSN, but the card has ""Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization" on it. I believe I will have to bring the card to SSA office for them to re-issue a normal SSN card after I get the approval for a green card, so I wonder if I can answer "Yes" here and the office will issue the replacement card instead of me having to come in afterward.

Any advice is appreciated.

Your SS card will say that until you have a green card.

You have to answer No

The instruction mentioned "replacement card" if application is approved, so that why I thought they were including my scenario as well (need a new card after application is approved), but I suppose I would be safe and choose "No". Thanks.

Choose Yes. You will be provided a new ss card with the same SSN but with those authorization wordings removed. If you are filing EAD as well, do the same. Whichever gets processed fast, you will get the SS card sooner.
