Have you ever stood in front of the shelves of toilet paper at your local market and tried to figure out the best deal?  Jumbo rolls, super jumbo rolls, mega rolls, 8-packs, 12-packs, one-ply, two-ply.  It's maddening.  I'm an economist, and I can't figure it out, so I choose not to waste the brain cells on it.  I just pay whatever and go my way.  It's called "rational ignorance" — I choose not to spend the effort to figure it out.  We'll come back to this.  [...]

i've heard rumblings about this in the past few weeks and i expect it to result in double taxation for anyone who

uses a combustion engine vehicle.

I have seen this idea talked about for years. Always trying to justify new forms of taxation because "the roads need to be fixed". Then taxes go up and the roads are still falling apart.

I agree.  If they impose this mileage tax, then ALL petroleum road taxes need to be removed at the pump.

the death tax.  once you've paid it, you never have to pay it again.

I do not think Kevin has ever gone shopping with my husband, who is determined to stand and figure out the best deal at the store using the power of maths every time. He would argue that people should make an effort to figure things out, and to not do so shows laziness. I do not really care if it's a gas tax, a toll tax, or a mileage tax. A tax is a tax, and for all the taxes we collect, have we seen any improvement to our infrastructure yet?

One of my exs got mad at me one time. I went in KFC. Do not remember exact price but for sake of argument.  8 PC was 8.99. 16 PC was  18.00. I ordered 2- 8 PC because it was 2 cent cheaper.  The clerk was like, sir dont you just want a 16 PC. No maam I want 2 8 PC. The clerk got irritated but I held my ground. Principal of the matter. Wife got embarrassed. 

I guess KFC thought none would catch.

Happens a lot in supermarkets, used to be the big box would be cheaper, often not so. But them most people can not add up.

Not to worry.  4 or 5 Trillion in new taxes coming to fund infrastructure.

Sure do hope one way or another some money gets spent on fixing roads, specifically the interstate system.  Drove 2000+ miles last week going from SW Florida to West Virginia and back.  My God the interstates were horrible after leaving FL.  I know, we are blessed in FL since we don't have the winter issues to deal with, but the rest of the trip was bad.  So many holes and poorly maintained sections.  Surprised I didn't lose a tire or break a wheel.  The roads are an embarrassment.

You sound impressively like my very real buddy, WCG (World's Cheapest Gringo).  As just one of the impressive stories, WCG spent 5 hours on long-distance phone, coaching his non-mechanic wife on how to replace an alternator because it was far cheaper than going to a repair shop.  He told me after, "That call was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life, but it was worth it to save all that money!"
