existing social security number from J1 for K1 fiance

Hi,

Referenced to guides:

If K1 Fiance did not have SSN, it is recommended to apply for SSN about after 2 weeks upon arrival in US.

Since K1 Fiance already has an existing Social Security Number/Card from past J1 visa, Fiance does not have to submit any other application regarding to SSN? The Social security card has the note "Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization".

Also, want to re-verify: After receiving card for AOS and/or EAD, do we update SSA that Fiance has EAD/AOS? And then SSA will send new social security card WITHOUT the note "Valid for work only....."???

During the wait for the updated social security card, is the AOS/EAD green card enough to meet the requirement of the old social security card's note "Valid for Work only...."???

Thanks,

she can go to the office to update once she gets the EAD/AP card.

Only after AOS is approved is when a card without that wording can be issued. https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents/who-is-issued-this-document

Quote

*Unrestricted Social Security cards that are acceptable List C documents are only issued to:

  • U.S. citizens
  • Noncitizen nationals of the U.S.
  • Lawful permanent residents
  • Refugees
  • Asylees
  • Citizens of the Republic of Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, or the Republic of Palau admitted under a Compact of Free Association
  • Canadian-born American Indians
  • Mexican-born Kickapoo Indians

In the period after EAD approval but before AOS is approved it results in the same "Valid for work only....." note that the current card has.

On Form I-485 there is an option to request a replacement SS card. If selected then after I-485 is approved SSA should issue a new card without the wording. https://www.uscis.gov/news/news-releases/uscis-expands-partnership-with-social-security-administration

Thanks all!

I'll plan on selecting the option for replacement social security card on I-485 (AOS app), which results in new Social Security card without the note "Valid for work only...."
