USCIS case was approved and then reopened?

Hello everyone

Long story short, my wife filed a petition back in May 2019 for her mother. We received an RFE, sent the requested documents and in August 2020 received a denial letter. After reading the denial letter, there was a misunderstanding on my part regarding the evidence they wanted on the original RFE, so we filed an appeal in September 2020 and included the correct documents that were requested by USCIS. Got a letter dated September 2nd, 2021 saying the case was approved and was being forwarded onto the NVC for further processing. I just checked the mail today and got another letter dated September 7th, 2021 saying that the case has been reopened due to an appeal that was filed on the case. The letter doesn't have any more details and I am very confused at this point as to what is going on. Has anyone else ever run into this? Appreciate the help!

The letter I received on September 2nd I believe is from USCIS. It was addressed from the Potomac Service Center.

Okay, Potomac Service Center is USCIS. I'm not exactly sure, but I'd just assume this is just a case of "wires getting crossed". USCIS received the BIA's order to approve the case, which they did, and it's possible that now they have to roll whatever you supplied to the BIA into the I-130, hence the reopening since they're probably not supposed to operate on concluded (approved or denied) cases.

What's it say on the USCIS's check case status for the I-130?

Contradictions without citations only make you look dumb.

So when I check the case status online for the I-130 it says it was reopened on September 7th. The case status for the appeal, that's a separate case number, it says date of birth was updated on January 21st.
