Il. Lawmakers Closer To Law Letting Prostitutes Sue Pimps

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois lawmakers are moving closer to approving legislation letting prostitutes sue their pimps or anyone else who forces them into the sex trade.

The state Senate approved the measure 45-to-nine today. It now goes to the House, which has supported the idea in the past.

Supporters want to help protect young men and women who are lured into prostitution and exploited by others. They hope lawsuits would discourage exploitation and give ex-hookers a way to start over.

But opponents argue the bill is flawed.

They argue the real victims aren't the prostitutes but the spouses of their customers and the people who live in neighborhoods where hookers hang out.

If they really want to protect them they should just make brothels legal, and then crack down HARD on anyone (pimp or independent operator) who is operating outside the umbrella of a legally licensed and state-inspected brothel.

Why make it so complicated and restricted? Why not come up with a simple business license that requires things such as regular health check-ups to remain in effect? Prostitutes w/o valid license get busted, the others are legally running their business. Fair and square. Well, the pimps won't like it and might just lobby against such legislation.

If prostitution is legalized, the next step is pushing for the unionization of the trade.
