I got the serology done as soon as our petition got approved. My vet is used to sending dogs abroad so they knew which lab were certified for international dog transportation. They took the sample and shipped it to a country with a certified lab.

We're doing this now. Thankfully, the CDC has added some Brazilian labs to their approved list. We were preparing to send them to Mexico before that.

Are your dogs microchipped?

On the web site for the labs in Brazil, it states that they will only microchip before the rabies vaccine not after.

Our dog is an adult that has been vaccinated but not microchipped. So I guess we would need to get him microchipped, wait 30 days, get the titers test, wait 90 days to travel? That is 4 months.

Or maybe we can get the titers test now, before the vaccine booster, then microchip along with rabies vaccine. Then he would be allowed to travel in 90 days? Any veteranarians here that could chime in?

Found it on the CDC site- Says to get titer blood drawn before vaccine booster. So I would need to;

1. blood draw for titers

2. microchip

3. rabies booster

4 rabies vaccine certificate that includes microchip number

After these items above are completed you can submit an importation application.

you will also need;

The rabies vaccination certificate has to have a certified English translation.

photos of dogs teeth front and side

travel dates and port of entry required on the application.

Two of them were previously chipped (and previously vaccinated), one was not. We did the chip first and then the vaccine/boosters immediately after.

I imagine the reason for the chip first, vaccine second is because they write the chip number on the vaccination record and then confirm that the dog you bring to the US is the dog from the vaccine record.

I am not a vet, but I don't see any reason why you can't get the titer immediately after the chip so long as you expect the results to pass.

Reading through the CDC website, it looks like they ask you to wait 30 days after the booster because it takes time for the antibodies to appear. If you expect them to have the necessary antibodies before the booster then it should be fine.

You can get the booster after the titers (per CDC instructions). So get the microchip and titers done now, I think those can be done the same day. The titers results need to have a microchip number anyway.

You have just about the right amount of dogs allowed to be imported. You cannot try to import more than 3.

The US citizen should apply naming the beneficiary as the permit holder for each dog. You will need a copy of the visa with the applications, you cannot apply without it.

Make sure you provide them with the following:

- Proof of unexpired rabies vaccination

- A certificate of good health from the dogs’ vet

- Rabies titers done at least 3 months before planned entry in the US. You should already have these so once the visa is obtained, you can apply.

ETA: I have a K1, applied for and received the permit.

Thanks for this!  I emailed them and asked and they said it could be approved but I was super unclear if they knew what a k1 was or if it was true.

For others, there is also a safe harbor if you import to Canada and wait six months the dog can be transferred to the usa.  That was our backup plan.  Any non high risk country for six months will waive the ban and permit requirement.

I think they are trying to stop imports for sale and not our personal pets though.

The CDC now says 45 days after titers test no-longer the 90 days as previously stated.

Now our challenge is finding an airline that will take 3 dogs in the cabin to JFK. I don’t think we will make the Jan 7 cutoff for other airports. Atlanta and LA are probably not good for us.

We only have one dog and he is just a bit bigger than the allowable size in the cabin. We are using a pet travel agency in Sao Paulo to ship him to the US. I believe they use Latam for the pet cargo service. Might be worth checking Latam for in cabin pets. When I was looking into bringing ours in cabin, United Air was the only US based carrier that was still allowing in cabin pets during the pandemic. Good luck!

My fiancee doesn't want to put the dogs in pet cargo, but it may be our only option. We've been stuck at "refused" status on CEAC for two weeks now so it's a race to get the visa issued and get approval from the CDC. I think the dogs will fit in the cabin, but I don't think United will fly to Kennedy from Sao Paulo. This whole thing is a big challenge - we want to minimize the amount of time the dogs have to fly, but logistically there are so few (if any) options.

Thanks for all the info in this topic, I have an 1yo pomeranian and I'm still waiting for my NOA2. Best of luck for everyone here, please mention which airline allowed in cabin dogs if that's anyone's case.

Also, once the permit is granted, can we fly from Brazil to any airport in the US? Or it has to be one of the chosen airports by CDC?

See here for the airports: https://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-states/apply-dog-import-permit.html#approved-ports. After Jan 7 we must fly into JFK, ATL, or LAX.

United is the only US carrier that allows dogs in cabin from Brazil, but they don’t fly to any of the three airports above. IAH is an option before Jan 7.

LATAM goes to JFK but the max weight is 7kg/15lbs. That’s likely fine for your Pomeranian.

Copa flies to JFK via Panama. The max weight is 20lbs. I think that will be our option if we can’t make it by Jan 7, but I still need to call to verify that there is no issue bringing the dogs into Panama. I’m relatively confident it’s fine given past experience with their airport - passengers don’t go through customs unless Panama is the final destination.
