I guess I'm a big arsehole but I don't give a ####### for etiquette :P what you need is what you need - it's better to be honest than to be broke with 100 tacky china plates, gravy boats, and crystal vases you wanna ebay away :P My family didn't gasp and point, they were gracious and very kind with their money gifts ;) I wouldn't worry, not everyone is too uptight in the states. When my mom was invited to friend or family weddings, she'd get them 4 huge packs of toilet paper and about $100 in cash. I think I've inherited her practical gene ;P

It always made them laugh, but the amount of times, 6 months down the road they'd say "you realise we've still not had to buy toilet paper" and she'd smile and say "i know!" lol

that's why I mentioned the type of family everyone is from depends on what you do. If your family wouldn't be upset with it then ask for cash. I just could never do it and I don't consider myself uptight. But also I was very very lucky to not get one tacky gift and a lot of cash. Oh wait...I did get a tacky pot holder. I re-gifted it along with one tacky nighty that has become a tradition to regift among my girl-friends...Horrible..simply horrible!!

I need TP for my bunghole.......

(that seemed relevant somehow

ANYwho, no registry for us. Seems a bit tacky for a second marriage, particularly when we already have what we need to 'set up house'.

My best friend put a $20 rubbermade trash can on her registry - for some reason it really amused me so I just had to buy it for her

Practical!! Great gift.

We did a wedding shower game for my girl friends shower that had all the prizes in a trashcan...it was filled with things like dish washing soap, cleaning products, etc etc.

The girl that won basically had supplies for a year!

Americans do not like giving cash but they don't mind gift cards!

That's not true for New Yorkers. Whenever I go to a wedding, I give cash...one time, everyone at my table was all 'how tacky! cash!'

:rolleyes::lol:

Yeah, I am from NJ and it is cash all the way.

WOW thank you all for your responses - well as it stands David lives in his mum's condo right now (his mum moved back in with her boyfriend) so we have everything we really need in the house. We are looking at buying our own place with the profits of my house sale. I looked at wal-mart and they have some pretty neat stuff - i kinda liked stuff for the bathroom etc but until we buy our house we wont know what we will have there - ok I guess we can always paint it the colour we want lol. WE set a registry up with wal-marts but we dont know if we will use it - OMG _ they even have the ghiridalia chocolates (sorry cant spell it right now lol) to add to the registry - umm definately need some of those lol.

The idea of money would also best suit us as we dont really want a load of gifts that we have to store till we buy our house, but again its the question of how do we tell ppl this?

For a start my family here in the UK are not very happy about the whole thing so i guess I can count all of them out and say we wont get nothing from them. And Davids family is very small so i guess if we tell his mum to kinda mention money would be more use to us right now that may work!

It was great to hear everyones opinions and what they did. Both David and I are still uncertain about what we will do for the wedding - we had decided on a court ceremony with very close family members attending (a small do) and then having a big party where we invite all friends and family I somehow dont even see it going more that probably 75 ppl - but we just want everyone to get together and have fun, eat, drink and be merry:) - but then again we also both decided that we may not even do that : just have the wedding done at the courthouse and just close family members have dinner and thats it - and maybe in a years' time we will renew our vows and make that a big event, depending on how our financial situation is then. Why waste all that money on just one day?? Ohh so indecisive I am lol - and well David is "whatever you want Lina!" lol

I am sure we will sort it out once I get there:)

Thanks again all

I have no problem at all with registeries for other people's weddings. Its very easy now to buy online so you dont even need to leave the house to purchase a gift. The store always keeps the gifts for the couple so there is also no need to wrap your gift or carry it to the wedding. I find requests for money a little distasteful. I have known a few couples who have requested money as a present and I got the impression from all of them that they wanted to cover the cost of their wedding. They could have married quietly for next to no cost, but instead had a big "do" and wanted to burden all their guests with the cost. Tacky.

Anyway, we didnt ask for any form of gift and only asked for people's presence (not presents). Most of my guests made a charitable donation to the cats home I volunteer for and that was lovely.

Lina,

One thing to be aware of is that a lot of the USA stores on line don't like accepting non-US credit/debit cards. Even for a wedding registry they might only accept a credit/debit card that is issued from a USA bank or has a USA Billing Address.

Just thought it might be worth pointing out that. I just don't want you to setup a registry and have non of you're friends and family back in the UK be able to buy anything from it. Just check with the store before you commit.

Rob

I used my UK Credit card on Kmart and worked fine no probs the stuff being sent to my fiancee. Means it will work on sears.com. I missed out on a 36 peiece dinner set for $4.95

We set up a webpage on the Cancer Research website www.giveincelebration.org inviting charity donations in lieu of wedding gifts as we really didn't need anything and didn't want our guests to feel they needed to buy us anything.

When we sent invitations out, we didn't mention anything, but almost everybody asked when replying. We had a carefully worded reply simply saying that gifts were unnecessary, however, if anyone wanted to make a charitable donation, here's how to do it, and if anyone really wanted to buy something for us, well thank you.

For us it worked really well. We had some really nice unusual gifts from some people and unbelievably generous donations to Cancer Research.

A gift registry is great if there is actually stuff you need, but otherwise there is a tendency to put down a whole load of items which will go into a cupboard and never see the light of day. Personally, I would feel awkward asking for money, but I like the idea of getting a parent to deal with it. Smart!!
