I sent off my 2020 MFJ tax return and ITIN application for my husband on May 13.  No word about anything until two days ago, 9/3/21.  I got a letter from the IRS addressed to my husband but his name is spelled wrong.  Also, they are asking for his passport (or certified copy).  What I included with his ITIN application was not an original certified copy of his passport but a scanned copy of a certified copy.  I'm not sure if the issue is with the scanned certified copy of passport, or the fact they have spelled his name wrong.  I visited my husband this summer and got the original certified copy of his passport but I'm afraid if I send this they will reject it.  Do you guys think the issue was that they could tell it was a scanned copy and not the original certified copy?  Should I just send the original certified copy of his passport now and hope they accept it?  Has anyone else had an issue with certified copies of passports being rejected?  I'm wondering if they are cracking down and only want original passports.  They offered other documentation that you can provide, but my husband says he is not allowed to send any identification out of the country.  Thanks for reading and for any help you can provide! 🙏

They want  a certified copy and that's what u send/ IRS doesn't say send another copy

this is why we did an original of birth certificate for proof of ID as sending passport seemed a little too much ./  you don't get documents back from IRS

Yep but I didn't have the original certified copy of the passport at that time, and now I do :)   But I"m afraid they will reject the original certified copy also.

Birth certificate doesn't have a photo.  What did you send with a photo?

Can anyone who got a certified copy of their passport from Morocco specifically tell me where your spouse got their copies?  I mean from what agency?

Where did you get certified copy of your passport?

Usually, you'll get it directly from your country's passport authority

or

you'll schedule an appointment at US Embassy for an endorsed copy.

He got it from the correct agency in Morocco I believe.  They say to get the copy from the agency that issued it, and that's what I told my husband.  At any rate, I think the problem goes back to the fact it wasn't an original, the one I sent.  But we decided at the last minute to do MFJ and at the time I didn't have time to get the original.  I thought maybe they would accept it, and at least my return would be starting to be processed.  After talking to 2 IRS customer service agents, I decided to mail the original certified copy of his passport.  We will see what happens.  They will accept it inshallah.

Oh I see. They are certainly interested in the original certified copy and not a photocopy of it. Since you are aware already and sent the original, you should be good.
